Victoria golfer earns spot in national tournament

EULESS – Victoria’s Sarah Davis carded a 1-over 143 to win the girls division of the First Choice Big “I” Junior Golf Classic and earn a berth to the national tournament.

Davis posted round of 72-71 on the par-71 Texas Star Golf Course in Euless to earn her berth to the national event on Aug. 2-7 at the Country Club of North Carolina in Pinehurst, N.C.

Taylor Newlin of Frisco was the runner-up with a 75-75-150.

Cuero’s Kevin Iraggi and Yoakum’s Garrett Nobles also participated in the state event. Iraggi posted an 80-85-165 and Nobles an 84-80-164.

League City’s Will Dusenberry won the boys division with a 69-70-139.

Kresta, Cavazos leading

Edna’s Meredith Kresta and Corpus Christi’s Vance Cavazos are the first-round leaders at the Southern Texas PGA Junior event at Colony Creek Country Club.

Kresta carded a 77 Monday to lead the girls 15-18 division, while Cavazos fired a 70 to lead the boys 16-18 division.

Also in the girls 15-18 division, Yoakum’s Larissa Loredo shot an 88 and Runge’s Alicia Caballero a 121.

Victoria’s Maddy Buhler is in second place in the girls 12-14 division with an 80, while Woodsboro’s Kasie Fierova is fifth with a 100.

Yorktown’s Robert Knobles is tied for fourth in the boys 16-18 division with a 77, while Victoria’s Michael Vasquez is in seventh place with an 80. Other participants include Victoria’s Jordan Salazar (82), Goliad’s Vance Vela (82), Yoakum’s Jack Matusek (87), Woodsboro’s Josh Fierova (89), Port Lavaca’s Tanner Hermes (89) and Cuero’s Derek Loebbecke (89).

Corpus Christi’s Vance Edwards leads the boys 14-15 division with a 77, while Shiner’s Matthew Pohler is in third at 83. Other scores include Victoria’s Garrett Wakefield (92), Weston Hall (97), Derik Satsky (98), Jared Poland (121) and Williams Watkins (124); Yoakum’s Hogan Lauer (94), and Shiner’s Colter Kaspar (113).

Final-round play begins today at 7:30 a.m.
