CUERO – Three juveniles have been arrested and a cache of 14 weapons were recovered following the burglary of two DeWitt County homes last week.

The boys, two 14 and one 15, have been charged with two counts of burglary of a habitation and are in the Victoria County Juvenile Detention Center.

The burglaries occurred on June 30, one in the 500 block of Thomas Street in Cuero and one in the 1500 block of McCurdy Road outside the city limits.

Later that day, a search warrant was executed in the 100 block of Corrine Street in Cuero. During the search of the home and an out building, 13 long guns and one pistol were recovered, according to a news release from the DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office.

“This investigation could not have been completed without the help of our citizens. It reinforces the fact that when citizens and law enforcement work together, crimes are solved and our streets are safer for everyone,” said DeWitt County Sheriff Jode Zavesky, acknowledging that tips from the public assisted in locating the weapons.

DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Carl Bowen led the investigation and was assisted by Sgt. Sam Saunders of the Cuero Police Department.

  • There's nothing going on to kids these days that justifies them breaking the law in this fashion...maybe a starving child will go into a store and try to steal food...perhaps that is something I would consider justifiable.

But these are like some others have said, just a couple of crooks doing something they think is "cool". Society is the victim of these worthless excuses for human beings.

  • Stop trying to see the big picture. Sounds like these are kids that are either trying to get in a gang are already in a gang. I bet if you do a drug test on them they'll flunk that too.

  • Sorry Hav....you are obviously of the younger generation. My dad used to clean commodes and carry out trash when he was 9 years old....during the depresssion....He would go and work at a restaurant....no he wasn't hired for the job...but if he worked really hard, the owner of the restaurant might....I said might....give him as much as a nickle for a night's work. However if the crowd wasn't good, then his work was volunteer only....or he might get half a sandwich or some take home scraps off the patron's plates.  Did he have time to be disturbed about the state of the national economy and collect some guns and cause some trouble?  Hardly!!!
And, yes most people during the depression had no jobs...however my grandfather did work in the oil field. My Grandmother had left Grandpa and 5 kids, my dad the youngest. So since Grandpa had a job, and no matter what if you had a job during the depression you did not miss work, and sometimes he had to be gone a week at a time for a job if there was a blowout the 5 kids took care of themselves while he was gone.
And if you think that was an unusual situation during that time...dead wrong.
And as far as there being no further school related killings since Virginia Tech....do you live in a cave????? You don't listen to the news? There have been numerous school shootings and attempted school schootings since Virginia Tech.
    Open your eyes man.....

  • So what can 13,14 & 15 yr olds be soo upset about that they feel the need to break into 2 seperate homes & steal weapons? Do you seriously think they were sitting around watching the news & the gas prices, unemployment, housing crisis set them off & they decided they had enough & needed to collect arms to protect themselves against the evils of society? Please......they are bored teenagers that wanted to do something risky to brag to their friends about. How else do you think they got caught? Poor kids my aunt fanny.....more like poor us who have to deal with the ever increasing numbers of kids like that.

  • Southtexas, the Virginia Tech shooting was more than 14 months ago. How many unstable kids have followed suit for their moment of fame and glory?.   .The Depression was not when people were too busy working---there were no jobs. Now is when parents are too busy working several jobs, instead of raising their kids..
.  .Tstorm, ask the kids that, not me.  Ask them what they are upset about.

  • you think 13 and 14 is younge? offenders come in all shapes, sizes and ages...some younger than 10...but the law can't do anything to them until they are 10 or older.

don't blame society for children's bad behavior...most of the blame falls on the parents, then the rest falls on the kid. many children in the same situations do not break the law and survive the hardships of life and become good people...others choose the wrong way.

it's personal choice...i don't care how old they are...if you do the crime, do the time. breaking into a house could get you shot, they are old enough to know and understand that. so if it happens, well, tough shit.

  • Robert...why are they too young to get shot breaking into and burglarizing private homes? If you're old enough to commit felonies, you're old enough to get shot by a homeowner. In the dark, they'd look a lot older while coming through a window. Kinda makes me wonder what the parents were up to while this was going on.

  • Havivoca: Spoken like a true liberal. 14 year olds with dozens of weapons....bless their little hearts, life is so hard for them.

The fact is kids growing up in the Depression like my Dad did were faced with some real problems and there was no hoarding of weapons back then, they were too busy working part time jobs trying to help put food on the table.

The problem is that every time some nut job kid goes beserk and shoots up a college or school, i.e. Virginia Tech, the press is all over it like stink on cow dung and it is all you hear and see on the news for days. Unstable kids see this as a chance for a moment of fame and glory and follow suit. Quit making these kids famous.

Most importantly parents need to pay attention to what their kids are doing and saying and thinking.

  • Howdy Neighbor! I am speechless!

    July 8, 2008 at 11:59 a.m.
  • Havivoca, you're kidding, right?

I can understand that some kids might be angry and upset over the many problems in the world and even in our own country. Hell, I'm an old geezer and I get a little upset on a regualr basis about some of the evils in our nation. I can understand their desire for "change." What I fail to see is how burglarizing two of your neighbors can be considered a means to "fixing" anything.

Theft doesn't make these kids part of the solution. It makes 'em part of the problem!

  • Why is everyone so surprised that kids are angry about the mess that we are leaving for them to straighten out? What could they be thinking? Look around and see if you can guess what they're thinking. It doesn't surprise me that kids are fed up and angry---it surprises me that SO FEW kids are fed up and angry.

    July 8, 2008 at 10:38 a.m.
  • What were these kids thinking?

    July 8, 2008 at 8:21 a.m.
  • Hopefully they're young / smart enough to be reformed. 13/14 is pretty damn young to start a life in crime.

Way too young to be shot breaking into the wrong house.

    July 8, 2008 at 12:38 a.m.
  • What in the world were these kids planning on doing with all those guns? Sounds like these two kids are exactly where they need to be tonight.
