Murphy makes third straight Class 5A all-state first team

Memorial senior center fielder Erikka Murphy was named to the first team of the Collin Street Bakery/Texas Sports Writers Association Class 5A all-state softball team for the third straight year.

Murphy, who will play next season at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, batted .553 with 27 runs scored and 29 stolen bases. She was named the Most Valuable Player in District 27-5A and was chosen the Offensive Player of the Year on the 2008 Advocate All-Area Softball Team.

Memorial junior second baseman Valerie Garcia earned honorable mention on the all-state team.

Garcia batted .344 with 18 RBI, 22 runs scored and 10 stolen bases. She also had a .979 fielding percentage and committed only two errors on the season. Garcia was an All-District 27-5A first-team selection and also a first-teamer on the all-area team.

Alvin pitcher Amber Anderson was named the Class 5A Player of the Year and Alvin's Carla Newsom was selected the Coach of the Year.
