Calhoun players earn all-state honors

Castillo, Ramos, Whitaker selected to Class 4A team

Three Calhoun players were named to the Collin Street Bakery/Texas Sports Writers Association Class 4A all-state softball team.

Sophomore Cecilia Castillo was named a second-team pitcher and junior Porsha Ramos was selected to the third team as the utility player/designated player.

Freshman Rilea Whitaker was named the third-team second baseman.

Beeville pitcher Melanie Gonzalez received honorable mention.

Castillo was 14-7 with a 0.81 ERA and 255 strikeouts with only 31 walks in 138 innings pitched. She also hit. 527 with four home runs, 10 doubles, eight triples, 40 RBI and 36 stolen bases.

Ramos pitched and played shortstop. She was 10-7 on the mound with a 2.01 ERA and 144 strikeouts in 94 innings. She batted .362 and scored 26 runs.

Whitaker batted .320 with 12 RBI and eight stolen bases.

Gonzalez was 20-6 with 1.83 ERA and 193 strikeouts in 145 innings pitched. She batted .375 with six doubles and 16 RBI.

Aledo pitcher Whitney Canion was named the Player of the Year and Aledo’s Kevin Cook was chosen Coach of the Year.
