Texas’ energy needs are growing, Nuclear Energy for Texans President Tom Forbes said Tuesday morning, and that presents new challenges.
“We’ll need lots of ways to generate power,” he said.
Forbes spoke to a group of about 60 people at the Victoria Partnership meeting regarding Nuclear Energy for Texans, a group dedicated to supporting the development of nuclear assets across Texas.
The group is recruiting people statewide and, with Exelon Nuclear’s interest in Victoria, Forbes said it’s an important region.
The Warrenville, Ill.-based Exelon Nuclear announced in December that Victoria County was the primary site for a proposed nuclear power plant, but it has not yet decided to build.
The nuclear company plans to submit its Combined Construction and Operating License in September but another step comes first.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will host its first “scoping meeting” on Aug. 7, said Dale Fowler, president of the Victoria Economic Development Corporation.
The event is a chance for the NRC to inform the public about nuclear energy, he said, and will allow citizens to ask questions.
The meeting will be from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at the Victoria Community Center.
