Rains poured down on Elder Field on Saturday forcing a cancellation. On Sunday it poured Victoria Northeast runs, forcing another game to decide the District 27 11- and 12-year-old championship.

“We didn’t give up when we weren’t scoring runs,” said Northeast short stop Jerry Vasquez after his team won 10-0 over Victoria Northwest to keep its season alive. “We knew we could start scoring and we did. It was like a rush when we started.”

Northeast exploded for ten runs in the fourth inning, including scoring nine before Northwest was able to record an out.

“Everyone started to hit and you didn’t want to be the first out,” said Trent Salas who hit an RBI ground-rule double in the big inning. “I was just trying to drive the ball. We have a lot of confidence.”

The District 27, 11- and 12-year-olds championship series will be settled at 7 p.m. today at the Cuero Little League fields. Northeast needed a win to keep playing, while Northwest would have advanced to sectionals with a single win. The winner of today’s game will advance, while the loser’s season will end.

Northeast finished the contest with 17 hits with 13 of them coming in the fourth.

Hunter Perkins led Northeast with a 3-for-3 day, including a two-run home run that smashed into the left field scoreboard. Leadoff hitter Jonathan Ortega added three hits and two RBI, while Sam Poland went 2-for-2 with an RBI for Northeast.

Northeast has outscored its opponents 21-0 in the past two games coming off an 11-0 win over Bloomington to reach the District 27 championship. Northwest was limited to two hits, but knows that it has the ability to come back with a win today.

“We can’t have errors and we can’t quit,” said Northwest catcher AJ Kuester. “That was a really bad inning.”

Cameron Zafered and Hunter Fales both came up with singles for Northwest, while starting pitcher Austin Davis struck out four batters, including the side in the second inning.

While he came off the bench, A.J. Calvo was inserted into the lineup just as the hit parade began.

“It was awesome,” said Calvo who scored two runs. “The whole team was contributing and playing great. I was in the dugout for two innings and everyone looked down, but we still had hope.”

Hope and a short-term memory is what the team is relying on.

“We’re going to forget about this game and move on,” Kuester said. “We’ll be ready and try our hardest to win the next one.”
