While thunderstorms danced all around the Victoria area Tuesday, it was Victoria Northeast that struck like lightning.
Even having to battle the weather elements for four days, Northeast rose to the challenge and captured the District 27 11- and 12-year-old championship with a 14-2, five-inning victory over Victoria Northwest at Elder Field.
The two teams were twice rained out, but that didn’t seem to hamper Northeast’s offensive attack.
Following Sunday’s 10-0 win, Northeast brought its own lightning to the plate Tuesday, banging out six hits in the first inning, including two two-run homers, to open up a 5-0 lead and take the early momentum.
Northeast finished with 14 hits, including eight for extra bases.
“We knew if we stayed focused and could get the sticks going, we were going to put some points on the board,” winning pitcher Hunter Perkins said.
Perkins belted one of the two first-inning home runs, while Kyle Kutchka added the other.
Trent Salas added an RBI double in the first and a two-run single in the fifth that helped Northeast put the game away.
Salas said he wasn’t concerned about the weather.
“We wanted to play,” Salas said. “Everybody was talking about going to Edna or Yoakum or somewhere so we could play if it rained.”
But the rain held off and Northeast added three runs in the second on a three-run home run by Jerry Vasquez, a pair of runs in the third and four more in the fifth.
Manager Carlos Salas was proud of his club and the way it handled the adversity following a loss to Bloomington in the Area II tournament.
“After we lost 4-0, one of the coaches said this is what adversity is all about and the kids didn’t even know what that meant,” the manager said.
“The kids learned a lot when we lost that game and it may have been for the better. Our kids hit the ball well and play defense well.”
Northwest avoided the shutout with a pair of runs in the second on a one-out, two-run double from Cody Cavazos.
Northwest managed just four hits off Perkins, who retired the final seven batters he faced.
Northeast advances to the sectional tournament that begins Saturday in New Braunfels.
Calhoun 12, Bloomington 2

Calhoun, which has one loss in the double-elimination tournament, will face unbeaten Industrial today at 6 p.m.
Bloomington ousted Victoria Northeast 9-7 on Monday night.

I agree with you gostros; I am an aunt of a 11-12yr old Bloomington All Star player and I know that both teams did a tremendous job I cheered for my nephew when they won & when they lost. So good luck to NorthEast at the tournament in New Braunfels!!!
July 11, 2008 at 12:10 p.m.I'm all for airing complaints, don't get me wrong but they already filled up a whole other discussion on "Rising to the Challenge." In fact they fought it out through thirty something comments. That's why on this one I mistakenly thought I could congratulate my son and the other boys for doing so well but of course the very next comment after mine got the attack going again and he was one of the most comments on the other discussion. So thanks. Those kids practiced 7 days a week for three hours a day and it paid off for them.
July 10, 2008 at 10:17 p.m.Congratulation to all the Students who participate in extra curricula activities !! Dont be sorry for being honest. If it werent for people airing their complaints there would be no progress. Those who label it as troublemaking are close minded and are not open to improvement. Dont feel sorry for trying to contribute to a better place to live and for participating yourself!!
July 10, 2008 at 6:33 p.m.I just wanted to say congratulations because my child is on the Victoria team. I have no control over what the advocate publishes. I sat next to some Bloomington people when we played them and they seemed very nice. Can I just say congratulations to the kids without stirring up a hornets nest? Good grief!!
July 10, 2008 at 6:17 p.m.See all the negative publicity on Bloomington this year? Whats the beef?
July 10, 2008 at 6:08 p.m.I just feel bad for the children.. they do so well, and they get up in the morning towards the newspaper like evry American boy..and open it to the sports section to see the highlights of their game and NADA!!! what a bummer!!!... and you have to make excuses for them.. and say well maybe it was too late for them to publish it..but not too late for the other teams right?? Poor little guys..
July 10, 2008 at 5:52 p.m.The schools in the area are getting HUNDREDS of extra papers each day. Talk to one school and you made your goal. Talk to two and you'll double it.
July 10, 2008 at 5:36 p.m.I have and I have convinced my family members not to buy it either....if I can get 100 people to stop buying it that will be an accomplishment for me..
July 10, 2008 at 5:25 p.m.I think Bloomingtion should Boycott the paper all together, they like reporting only the bad in Bloomington. Besides, we wont have the "paper" in a few years, its all online. think of the resources saved; paper, fuel, pollution,
July 10, 2008 at 5:12 p.m.Its Wadded Up and in the trash can where everything about Bloomington goes..like always.. oh but when one of the boys or girls make it to the BIG show .. everybody is all over it because ..they are from the Victoria AREA.... Like The Little Hoffman girl and Philly Garcia.. you know they should of denied courage from the advocate..only had coverage for The Chron and Corpus Christi Caller.. but, I guess they aren't rude.. children..
July 10, 2008 at 5:07 p.m.WAY TO GO NORTHEAST!!! YOU PLAYED AWESOME AND WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU.
