“To every thing there is a season and a time to every purpose under the heaven. A time to keep and a time to castaway.” – Ecclesiastes 3:1, 6

Today, a friend and I fished at a little-known fishing spot that I think only she and I and the God who made it know about. The word “secluded” was created to describe this place.

We have fished there several times and it has always been productive. We try to save it for when we really need fish. Right at high tide we finally got to “the spot” after wading through knee-deep salt grass and gunky saltwater and we rigged up with great expectations.

After fishing about an hour and catching nothing, we had about decided that our “secret spot” was so secluded that even the fish did not know about it.

After changing our lures and methods of casting, we decided to change our minds and our location but just as we started to leave, I got a good hit and landed a nice redfish.

Our redfish was nice, but was not nice enough, for it only measured 19 ½-inches long. As the scripture says, I wondered what season it was, and should I keep this nearly perfect fish or cast it away to grow another necessary ½-inch. The thought came to me in this “secluded spot,” Lord who would even know if I kept an almost legal fish.

Well, I guess I answered my own question. I would know, my friend would know, and my Lord who made us all would know.

Dear Lord, It is hard to be honest when you’re the only one who knows the truth. I honestly had to do a great deal of soul-searching and extract a promise from that fish that when it got bigger it would come back before I could make up my mind that fish sticks aren’t too bad. I think the fish and I both needed that chance to grow.
