Firefighters closed a one-block radius around the intersection of Laurent and Guadalupe streets for about an hour Friday afternoon.

A crew working on Laurent Street construction dropped a concrete culvert on a service line, near the gas main, Battalion Chief Roger Hempel said.

Firefighters evacuated a radiator shop directly downwind from the leak, Hempel said, and diners at a nearby restaurant were asked to stay inside while the gas was turned off.

There weren’t explosive levels of gas at any nearby homes or businesses Hempel said.

Firefighters asked 50-year-old Ramon Gonzales to stop cutting grass behind Sam’s Restaurant Supply to avoid setting off sparks near the gas.

“I think they did a good job,” Gonzales said. “Safety first.”

The roads reopened at 2 p.m.

  • Maybe this would not have even happened if one of the 7 guys standing around not doing anything was actually contributing some work. It really ticks me off to see that everyday I have to take a detour or be stuck behind a line of traffic, and there is 1 worker actually working and then there is about 7 other guys not doing anything. Not to mention that we can't even finish one section of the city streets but we want to start working on another. How about finishing one task at a time, PLEASE.
