A collision involving two SUV’s and a tanker truck carrying chemicals closed both southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 77 on Saturday for more than an hour.

One woman was airlifted to a San Antonio hospital after emergency officials used the jaws of life to extricate her from her Ford Expedition on Saturday, said Victoria based Texas State Trooper Cole Dunaway.

The passenger of the Expedition was taken by ambulance to Citizen’s Medical Center. Their conditions are unknown at this time.

“I thought I was dead...,” said the driver of the second vehicle, Charles Rice, who refused treatment from paramedics on the scene and walked away with minor scratches.

The 19-year-old sophomore at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida who is studying Aerospace Engineering said, “I got out of the car and started thinking about the physics of it.”

“I’m glad I’m okay,” he said.

The semi-truck carrying chemicals sustained minor damage to its bumper and the load it carried was not compromised.

A maroon Ford Expedition failed to yield right of way and pulled out from Fleming Prairie Road to cross U.S. Highway 77. A gray 2004 Chevy Tahoe traveling south struck the front end of the Expedition. The Tahoe veered into and dented the fender of the tanker, according to Troopers.

Witnesses on the scene said the female driver of the Expedition was following another car and failed to stop at the stop sign on Fleming Prairie Road.
