Only a couple of days remain to sign up for this year’s Victoria City Championship.
It’s unfortunate that at the start of this past week only around 40 players had signed up for the premier local event that began last year. I know several more have signed up since then, but still the field should easily be around 100 since the event utilizes all three local clubs.
The tournament is open to all golfers 18 years or older who reside or work in Victoria County. Also, any non-resident that is a member of Colony Creek Country Club, Riverside Golf Course or Victoria Country Club is eligible as well.
The event is flighted and this year’s tournament will implement a ‘Ladies’ flight as well.
The cost ($100) is nominal when considering you will get to play on three different courses and attend a Saturday night social that will include live entertainment.
The tournament will be held Friday-Sunday with Colony Creek hosting the first round, Riverside the second and VCC the third round.
So, if you haven’t visited one of the courses yet to sign up, do so by Tuesday at 3 p.m.
Vega helps Texas retain Cup
Victoria’s Trevor Vega recently helped Texas retain the Texas-Mexico Cup.
The event was a three-day Ryder Cup format between some of the best junior golfers in Texas and Mexico held at Pecan Valley Golf Course in San Antonio.
Vega was a member of the boys 14-15 age division and even though he went 1-2 in the event, his Texas squad came away with an overall 77.5 to 42.5 victory over their Mexico counterparts.
Vega lost his two-man lowball match 1-down and his two-man alternate shot match 2&1, before bouncing back to win his 18-hole singles match 7&5.
Some 120 junior golfers, including 60 from Texas and 60 from Mexico, took part in the event.
Vega also competed in the Transamerican Junior Golf Championships at Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin and finished second.
Vega opened with an 80 and was tied for fourth, but shot a final-round 75 to finish at 155 to place second and just miss an opportunity to qualify for the Callaway Junior golf Championship.
Hole in one
Hank Waters recorded his first ace last Sunday when he holed out from 154 yards with a 24-degree perfect club on No. 3 white at Riverside. The shot was witnessed by Don Richards, Dan Richards and Georgie Richards.
Bunker shots
Several area golfers won their division at the recent Southern Texas PGA junior tournament held at Victoria Country Club. Flatonia’s Kraig Zimmerhanzel (88) won the boys 12-13 division, Shiner’s Matthew Pohler (76) the boys 14-15 division and Victoria’s Maddy Buhler (90) the girls 12-14 division. Victoria’s Eric Still (78) tied for second behind Pohler, while Yorktown’s Robert Knobles (75) placed second in the boys 16-18 division with Cuero’s Derek Loebbecke (78) placing fourth. ...Going into this week’s Rising Star Open in Texarkana, Mark Walker is the leading money winner on the Adams Pro Golf Tour with $5,000 in winnings. He is followed by Dawie Van der Walt, David Jenkins, Brett Callas and Jaxon Brigman. Victoria Open winner Ryan Vermeer is in sixth.
