Rosebuds playing for spot in league championship

When Clayton Meyer takes to the Riverside Stadium mound today, his manager isn’t expecting him to throw too many pitches.

“He’s a once a year pitcher for us,” said Victoria Rosebuds’ player-manager Will Wheeler of the 2001 Memorial graduate and former Louisiana Tech pitcher. “After this game he’s going to be done for the year.”

That’s the story for this group of 20-somethings who make up Victoria’s team playing for the South Central Texas Amateur League title this weekend. They don’t have youth or perfect health working on their side, but they still have a passion for the game.

“It’s just fun for us to come out here and keep playing baseball,” said Wheeler of the team that started playing the first week of May. “It’s a chance for us to play and compete.”

The team plays at 2 p.m. today against Schulenburg in the first semifinal game, while Bernardo and La Grange play in the other semifinal contest. The championship game will be played at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Riverside Stadium with a Rosebuds win on today.

“We’ve been pitching well and have been hitting the ball,” Wheeler said. “Pretty much everything has gone great for us this season. We’ve been fielding great lately, too. It’s been a really good year for us.”

La Grange won the championship last season, but the Rosebuds won the previous two years.

La Grange beat Victoria last season in the championship, and a rematch could be coming.

“We’re just looking for another win,” said Wheeler, who has been a part of the league for 10 years. “It’s what we expect to do. If we’re going to play, we want to win.”

Bay City’s Keith Kieschnick leads the Rosebuds with five home runs this season, while Colby Anders has compiled a 5-1 record.
