Five-year-old Julia Clark entered the boardroom with the intent of wowing the judges.
Julia smiled wide and walked gingerly around and behind the judges’ table to shake the three women’s hands. She complimented each one, either about her name or blouse.
Before she sat, the Chandler Elementary first-grader apologized for her speech. She was missing several teeth.
The judges looked over the bio Julia prepared for them. They asked what she wanted to be when she grew up.
Julia revealed she wanted to be a dentist.
“I want everybody to have big smiles,” she said, hands folded in her lap, ankles crossed.
“Aww,” the judges reacted.
Communication and life skills – like interviewing – are engrained and encouraged in all the participants in the 39th Annual Miss Victoria Pageant. When girls and young women apply to enter, pageant director Debbie Bennett Green teaches them modeling, poise and dancing. She also teaches them how to elaborate on answers to questions and expose their inside beauty with real life anecdotes.
Green said she gets calls from past participants who tell her the pageant process, with its many classes, helped them land an interview or job.
“I’m very impressed,” judge Nicole Nugent from San Antonio said. “A lot of 6- to 8-year-olds wouldn’t normally be exposed to this.”
Before Kelsey Kallman became the Young Miss Victoria last year, she was shy. The 9-year-old learned how to speak with people and represent Victoria in festivals and to other towns.
Young girls would come up to her, wanting to wear her dress and crown.
“I feel like I’m a role model,” the Vickers Elementary fifth-grader said. And so, she watches her behavior in public.
Mom Julie Kallman noticed a difference in her daughter’s self-esteem. She admitted she couldn’t get up and be so open on the microphone in front of a crowd.
Kayla Bomersbach, who relinquished her Junior Miss Victoria crown Saturday night, could do the strutting and dancing on stage. The 16-year-old Memorial High School junior has been dancing since she was 2 years old.
She was interested in the pageant, but dreaded the on-stage speech. The weeks of preparation brought her out of that shell and gave her the confidence to become more outgoing.
“I find that very hard – to sell yourself,” said Lauren Madden, last year’s Miss Victoria after witnessing how the Junior Miss contestants created 30-second commercials about themselves.
She feels her year as Miss Victoria affected her life and future. And not just because it boosted her college applications. She plans to attend Texas A&M in Corpus Christi in the fall.
“I’m more willing to speak up,” the 18-year-old said. “You learn to mature and be independent.”
About 250 people entered the Leo J. Welder Center for the Performing Arts on Main Street Saturday night to watch girls compete for the titles of Little, Young, Junior and Miss Victoria.
Dresses shined, eyes sparkled and cameras flashed as each girl worked up the courage to win the audience and judges over.
Dresdynn Warnell, 17, hoped the pageant would bring her confidence in her presence.
“I think it takes a lot of nerve to get up on stage and speak,” she said during the Saturday morning rehearsal. “Try to be yourself. You just want to be yourself.”
That advice paid off for the Memorial High School senior. She ended the day as this year’s Miss Victoria.

July 14, 2008 at 3:27 p.m.Ms Debbie, Kaylee and the rest of us Love You!! Thanks for being there for all of us!!
July 14, 2008 at 2:27 p.m.I was at the pageant on Saturday evening. In no way, shape, or form could a single person say that the stage was not full of outstanding young ladies. Instead of knocking how things were done because of issues with the director, why don't we give all of the young ladies a hand for having the courage to get up in front of a crowd of people and for giving it their all. Someone posted earlier about who did and didn't deserve to be Miss Victoria last year and I think that could have been left out. I have had seveal dealings with the Miss Victoria Court over the last year in parades and appearances as my son is the Under 1 CMBB and these young ladies have been nothing short of delightful. We need to focus on building up the youth of Victoria and not tearing them down. Good job to all of the contestants that participated on Saturday! I wish you all the best that your future has to offer.
July 14, 2008 at 1:53 p.m.Thanks gostros17.
July 14, 2008 at 1:51 p.m.redrage00,
July 14, 2008 at 1:49 p.m.You read the posts. as gostros wrote about last years Miss Victoria, not Kaylee. Kaylee is very anti drug!! Come on people, lets all try to leave some positive. Support these girls, crown winners or not! I know nothing about last years winners.
There you have it Victoria! Dresdynns mom and Kaylee's aunt agree! One of this years winners and the other a winner without a crown! Kaylee has improved on the final question which she had a problem with after the death of her brother. So she also accomplished something from the last two, as she is getting it back! Ya'll as a family will have a GREAT time. Maybe people need to watch and learn from these girls!! Congrats to you and your daughters for their accomplishments! Kaylee can be there for Dresdynn at school when someone says something negative and Dresdynn for Kaylee when they make fun of her for being a loser. I have sat at the other pageant in Victoria when Kaylee made a finalists and the lady behind me said, "Oh, don't worry about her, she can't do the final question anyway." Like I said, as sorry as it is, this is the way a winner gets treated!! Ignore and Enjoy!!
July 14, 2008 at 1:44 p.m.Kayleesaunt,
I did not and would never trash your niece, nor do I think that you or anyone in your family would do it to my children. We don't know each other, but I know your family and have seen them for many years at the studio. I said that Kaylee was beautiful and well spoken, but so was Dresdynn. I also said that I didn't think she had won any other pageants. This was not an attack on your niece and I apologize if you took it that way. Kaylee has won other pageants and I am sure it was well deserved, but let me say once again that had Dresdynn not won, I would have been very happy for any one of the contestants because they all winners in my book.
July 14, 2008 at 1:28 p.m.A friend of mine called me and told me people are saying things about Kaylee and now Desdynns mom is writing about her. Well as you can see I am Kaylees aunt. If you knew Kaylee or us, you would know very well that we had nothing to do with these posts. Kaylee has won various pageants in Victoria, local and otherwise and people always bashed her! Something with being a winner! I guess you see how easy people suckered you in and next thing you knew you did the same as them, thrashed an innocent 17 year old. Ask Ms. Debbie, she knows us all very well. Kaylee was very happy that Dresdynn won, she told us she knew her from school! Since this is your first time, Welcome to the world of pageants! This same thing has happened to Kaylee since the age of 5 when she won her first title. I won't put our business on the street but if you know Debbie so well ask about us. Congrats Dresdynn!
July 14, 2008 at 1:09 p.m.Jackofalltrades,
Please don't call events BS unless you have facts. Schuyler was calling the director because the director was out of state.. and for the record...I did not think that Dresdynn would win going into the pageant, but we prepared, we all worked very hard to get her ready and I guess our hard work paid off. I am happy for her, but I would have been happy had the outcome been different as well. I was proud of Dresdynn for getting up in front of the audience and speaking, even though it wasn't perfectly delivered, her message was true for her. I certainly would not have demeaned the other contestants if my child lost. These girls are 17 year old, just beginning to enter the adult world. My goal is to raise responsible young women who take pride in themselves and their accomplishments and who can take every loss and disappointment and turn it into a learning situation. We've had our share of disappointments, but each just makes us stronger. Your comments give me the opportunity to teach Schuyler and Dresdynn that "even innocent acts can be turned into something sinister in the right circumstances. As long as your motives and intentions are true and good, try not to let nasty comments get ya down.
July 14, 2008 at 11:17 a.m.You all have such interesting questions and comments!
Too bad, none of them are factual in any way, shape, or form.
Let's see - why is the participation in the Miss Victoria Pageant lower than it used to be? Maybe it's because people such as yourselves have bashed it so much that it makes others hesitate to put themselves in the position of being next on your list. Wait - maybe it's simple economics - what a novel idea! It can be expensive to participate in a pageant - isn't it great that this pageant director provides the girls with fundraising opportunities so that EVERY child that wants to participate may do so, regardless of their economic background! Wow - that's great!
You people don't even make sense. First you say that the pageant director has rigged the pageant. Well if that was the case, don't you think her niece would be sporting the Miss Victoria Crown? HELLO!
I have known the young lady that won the title of Miss Victoria since she was in elementary school. She is a wonderful, well deserving individual and will do a great job and serve Victoria well. Have any of you stopped to think that all of these negative comments would be hurtful to her?
And I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this pageant has nothing to do with DJ. Yes, I know that you would all like to blame DJ for all things wrong in the world, but she, in fact, has nothing to do with this pageant. Did you ever stop to think that maybe the reason that the new Miss Victoria decided to participate in the pageant was because of the possibility of winning a $1000 savings bond that could help her out with college? Maybe it's just common freaking sense and not some conspiracy of dance teachers out to destroy the universe.
My daughter has participated in pageants for many years. Sometimes she wins, sometimes she doesn't. When she doesn't win, she congratulates everyone that did, smiles, and goes on with her life. She doesn't fall apart and cry for days - it's a pageant for heavens sake. And I don't rush online to post hateful blogs about it. Again - I've got better things to do.
Money - of course, it must be all about the money! Let's see, this weekend over $2200 in savings bonds was distributed to deserving young ladies of this community. You've alread said that the participation was down. I know for a fact that the entry fee was $150. Do the math people. After she paid for the prizes, flowers, sashes, rental facility and general expenses, I'm guessing that the evil pageant director didn't make much of anything. Yet another false accusation!
ABWA does not sponsor the Miss Victoria Pageant. However, many of the fine ladies that are members of ABWA still serve on the Miss Victoria Pageant Committee. And regardless of who sponsors it, the same pageant director has been there for many, many years.
I personally know the pageant director. It angers me that small minded people can get online and post untruths and ridiculous innuendos about someone that is an asset to our community. Do any of you have any idea how many hours she spends working with young children? When she goes to bed at the end of the day, she can think about how she made a positive influence on some child's life. When you go to bed at night, all you can think of are vile things to say about someone else. I think you need to look in the mirror. How many good things have you done? How many organizations do you help out in? How much of your time do you give to this community? I'm not a betting person, but I would lay down money that this woman does more in a week for this community than you've done in a year.
How sad that none of you have anything better to do with your life than bad mouth someone else.
Here's a question for you know-it-alls ....
How many wonderful things could be accomplished if you channeled all your negative thoughts and comments into something good for a change?
Maybe that should be the final question for the pageant next year. Because you could all learn a lot by following the examples of every one of the young ladies that participated in the Miss Victoria Pageant this year.
July 14, 2008 at 11:07 a.m.Maybe someone should contact the Victoria Chamber of Commerce and ask them to sponsor the pageant. I think this works in most cities. A well-run, fair pageant is good publicity for a city.
July 14, 2008 at 10:52 a.m.I am truly disgusted with the people who have posted comments on this site. Dresdynn and Schuyler dont deserve this bashing. Dresdynn won the pageant and since the judges have spoken, she obviously deserved to win. There are many people who think that if you are blonde hair and blue eyed, then you definitely have to win because that makes you prettier. Well I guess you are wrong. However, the blonde haired girl is very pretty and very well spoken, but so is Dresdynn. Dresdynn never said she had no public speaking or interviewing skills. She said that was not an area of strength and something she wanted to work on. She is mature enough and strong enough to admit her limitations. Please understand that knowing your limitation does not mean that you have no experience. In my household, we strive to BE THE BEST THAT WE CAN BE. . RedRage shame on you. Being in a pageant is about inner beauty, outer beauty and how the contestants carry themselves throughout life. For your information, both my girls are in the top 13 percent of their class. Both have done a lot of public speaking. Schuyler has been the President of her class for two years, Dresdynn has been the class secretary all throughout her high school years. They both have been homecoming sweethearts since freshmen, and on the prom court as well as many other school activities. So for your information, they have excelled in-school as well as out of school. Being a dancer, competing in dance competitions and being a dancer at the high school has successfully prepared them to go forth and conquer!!!!
You can bash DJ and you can bash Debbie Green, however my girls (Schuyler and Dresdynn) have prospered through dancing and being on competitive dance teams. They have learned how to handle pressure situations, be a team player, be a leader, handle conflict, manage their time, have poise, and be a better person all-around. Schuyler is the Major and Dresdynn is the first senior Captain, and RedRage, each year, they have an interview with a panel of judges. Each year they stand before their peers, and other members in the community and give a speech. It is from this process, that Dresdynn knew that public speaking was an area that she needed to strengthen.
Do you know that the judges are out-of town judges? They had never laid eyes on Dresdynn before the day of the pageant? Do you know that the casual-wear-speech was only 25 percent of the score? And RedRage, she is not an awesome public speaker and may never be but whatever she is, It was good enough to be crowned Miss Victoria on Saturday night. And on another note, the pretty blonde haired girls with the beautiful dress has been in many other pageants in Victoria and I dont think she has won any of them. You might have to ask the judges about that.
July 14, 2008 at 10:50 a.m.wow.. Nepotism still exists in Victoria ..hehhehehehe..didnt know that..(whatever)....
July 14, 2008 at 10:22 a.m.Oh and also the niece also 16 and a dance student for 17 years! Kinda strange!!
July 14, 2008 at 3:02 a.m.I am sorry but I had to write as I was there! In the Miss Victoria category there was a Beautiful Blonde Girl!! She looked like someone that could compete in the Miss Texas or Miss USA Pageant. She had more grace than I have ever seen!! Her speech was like she was speaking to you and not memorized but of course that is why she didn't forget her speech and have to repeat!! She was also cute and showed personality on the final question! Very polished young lady!! She stood so far above the rest that the only way she should have lost was if she cursed the judges in interview( which you could tell that was not possible from this young lady!!). But guess what she got nothing!! My wife told me ishe was not involved in dance or drill team or the niece of Debbie Bennett Green. Well, Victori I was there, and I seen it for myself!! It is true!! And Young Lady, if you read this, forget the political stuff you deserve better!! This pageant isn't good enough for you!! You deserve fairness!! Sorry as you must be deeply disappointed that you were done this way!!
July 14, 2008 at 12:44 a.m.Texasdad, Yes, you are right this pageant definately could use some competition. Besides, what life skill is being taught when girls break pageant rules and get away with it???
July 13, 2008 at 11:21 p.m.The only life skill being taught by this example is:
"Its not what you know but who you know."
yes...jackofalltrades...their where exceptions made...in any other pageant that is professional. no exceptions would have been made you would be counted against or just disqualified but in victoria it seems we have politics??? and we need to give this pageant competition. we need to find another non profit to get more girls involved and help build their confidence and keep victoria's name professional with honesty and integrity when putting pageants together.
July 13, 2008 at 10:28 p.m.Well, I have to inform you I have been in Pageants where I have entered my daughter and they are very expensive.. and very time consuming..they are bad for the young girls that so want to win and dont..because .. you have to have money to do it. So,that you can play with the BIG DOGS, so to speak....or you have to go and find sponsors to help you do it..and believe me its a cut throat situation.. I have also participated in movie tryouts.. another money situation..and takes alot out of your family budget..but, whoever wants to do it.. and sacrifice and go all the way.. and make it .....more power to them.. but, I realized that putting my child through that wasnt worth it..Till this day.. she still talks about ..running for Miss Texas..which was her dream.. but when we found out these girls have serious money..or serious people that have money backing them.. Its kinda hard to compete..because the dresses are very expensive..and you cant buy just one..you have to have many to choose from, and these girls bring theirown makeup artists and their own hairstylists along..and pay them some serious money..So, just a thought..
July 13, 2008 at 10:14 p.m.<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/vH5z931YgFg&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/vH5z931YgFg&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
What?? Did you say that two girls were given "exceptions" to the interview process?? Why do certain girls need special treatment? That is totally unfair and I wonder how many parents were upset. That should not be tolerated.
This kind of situation is similar to what kinds of "exceptions" are made with certain girls and issues who are on the MHS dance and drill team. Remember it is a big coincidence that alot of the participants in this pageant are members of the dance and drill team so things probably won't be fair. Does being a member of strutters or drill team get you extra points??? I wonder. What about the new miss Victoria is she a member of the dance and drill team?
July 13, 2008 at 9:17 p.m.A good friend of mine has a daughter who wanted to participate in the pageant and she was overwhelmed and shocked at all the "extras" that were required, such as sponsors and all the costs involved. She couldn't afford it because she was a single parent...What a shame.
if anyone was involved in this pageant you would have known that the junior miss who won and the little miss who placed where given exceptions to meet the judges for their interview later that day before the pageant started. tardiness was stressed by ms. green and contestants where told DO NOT BE LATE TO ANY EVENTS INCLUDING THE INTERVIEW. how does this happen??? any suggestions on how a non profit organzition can start a miss victoria pageant to give the other citizens a fair chance??? know wonder no one in victoria wants to sponsor or participate in this pageant it seems to be all about strutter and dance contestants placing or winning!!!
July 13, 2008 at 8:37 p.m.I don't know if the advocate will tell us who won.... I had read that there were about 4 contestants total competing for Miss Victoria....That doesn't seem like such a big competition to me, and I wonder why other girls don't try out..I speculate because the only girls that compete are strutters, ex-strutters and dance and drill team members so that might be the reason why. I guess all the other girls in our city don't want or care to compete if that is what it's all about. Go figure!
July 13, 2008 at 5:57 p.m.yeah, really who else won? Most people know who won last year.
July 13, 2008 at 12:30 p.m.So who else won?
July 13, 2008 at 12:17 a.m.
