The new Taiwan Consulate General of Houston toured Victoria, Jackson and Calhoun counties on Saturday.
Joseph F. C. Chen, director-general of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, toured the Formosa Plastics facility in Point Comfort before touring Victoria. He hopes to continue to promote relations between Texas and Taiwan.
The two-way trade between the United States and Taiwan totals $64.6 billion with Taiwan investing $10.2 billion in U.S. companies, he told the city and county officials at the Victoria Country Club. Formosa Plastics, which started as a company in Taiwan, invested $3.2 billion in Texas alone.
Chen hopes to increase that investment with plant and company expansions.
“We hope the trade between Taiwan and Texas can expand,” Chen said.
Chen came to Houston four months ago after transferring from Taiwan’s Washington D.C. office.
The Crossroads area has always maintained friendly relations with the Taiwan office, said Arlene Marshall, president of the Calhoun County Economic Development Corp. Leaders are becoming acquainted with the new representative, she added.
