For a kid who never pitches, Anthony Cantu sure made it look easy in a crucial situation.

Cantu, the starting right fielder for Victoria West, came in to pitch in the seventh inning with two men on and his team up 5-3. He made sure that’s where they stayed.

“I was nervous because I hardly ever pitch,” said Cantu who also went 2-for-4 at the plate and stole two bases. “It felt real good to get them out. All I knew to do was throw strikes.”

Cantu and the 13- and 14-year-olds from Victoria downed Rockport-Fulton 5-3 in the first game of the Section 4, Junior Baseball Tournament at Riverside Stadium on Sunday.

West starter Seth Harrison picked up the win after pitching the first five innings of play. Harrison fanned five Rockport-Fulton batters before being relieved by Brooks Bynum, Brayden Blanton and Cantu.

West returns to the field today at 7 p.m. against the winner of New Braunfels and Alvin.

Victoria finished the game with seven hits, while Rockport-Fulton finished with six hits and 10 runners left on base. Blanton, who started at shortstop recorded six outs during the course of the game, including the final out on a ball hit up the middle of the diamond.

“It was just a basic throw and follow through,” said a confident Blanton as his team exited the dugout. “Everybody was out there helping each other out. I just made some plays and the last out. We’ve been playing really good.”

West leadoff hitter David Valenzuela scored the game’s first run on a passed ball and came up with a triple in the seventh inning, while Jacob Garza, Kyle Marks and Braylin Kasper added singles in the Victoria win.

Rockport-Fulton starting pitcher Chance Marshall went five innings and struck out nine West batters.
