The city of Victoria could be going into the real estate business.

Staff will pitch a proposal to the city council today that could lead to the sale of Navarro del Norte and the recycling center property on Huvar Street.

Mayor Will Armstrong said he likes the idea.

“Those certainly have become more valuable properties than when we first acquired them,” he said. “I think it would be a good idea to put those properties on the market.”

The council meeting begins at 5 p.m. in the Council Chamber at 107 W. Juan Linn St.

The city purchased Navarro del Norte, located across from Lowe’s, from the Texas Department of Transportation in 2000 for about $463,000. It spent more money to remodel the property so it could house water and wastewater, street and traffic control operations.

City Manager Charles Windwehen said the property met the city’s needs, but it’s not an ideal location. He said heavy traffic makes it tough for large city equipment to get into and out of the property and neighbors have complained about the noise and dust.

The Huvar Street property just off of Navarro has served as a fire station and recycling center for more than 20 years. Commercial developments are popping up around the property now.

Windwehen and Armstrong said they think both pieces of commercial property can be sold for a profit and put back on the tax roll. The city could use money from the sale to move the city departments someplace more centrally located.

“We know property with frontage on Navarro is valuable,” Windwehen said. “We think it might be a good time in the market.
