“Fence,” “wall,” both terms mean the same thing. Most dictionaries define these words as “a barrier.”
Ironically, a wall can symbolize two opposing things: It can symbolize protection and defense, but it can also symbolize containment, and a shutdown of communication.
We think the latter applies to the border fence or wall between the United States and Mexico. And, of course, there’s more to it than that when economic factors are added to the mix. And there are many economic factors involved on both sides of the border.
The Great China Wall, which is the only manmade object that can be seen from space, is a good example of how a great wall built for protection and defense failed.
The earliest beginnings of the Great Wall began in between the 5th century BC to 221 BC. And from that point it was fortified and lengthened numerous times to repel invaders. Actually, the Great Wall of China is a series of many walls constructed by various dynasties.
The Manchu invasions in 1600 ended construction on the Great Wall because the Manchus were able to breech the wall in 1644 and conquer Beijing. With this victory the Manchus started the Qing Dynasty and ended the Ming and Shun dynasties.
Another wall that was used for containment was the Berlin Wall. First construction in August 1961 resulted in various upgrades to the Berlin Wall over the years. The Berlin Wall ultimately symbolized the Cold War. And its evil symbolism fell following the fall of the Soviet Union.
Estimates of those killed trying to escape over/under/through the Berlin Wall total about 940 people.
Many more escaped. According to Chris Burns, CNN Berlin bureau chief, in a 1999 article, those who fled East Germany across the wall did so in “secret compartments of cars, inside surfboards, in balloons and makeshift planes. They swam Berlin lakes or canals to freedom, and tunneled their way to the West.”
Does that sound familiar? No matter how high or long a barrier is, illegal immigrants and drug runners wanting to enter the United States will find a way. The border fence is a waste of U.S. dollars.
And the border wall prevents indigenous wildlife from roaming their habitat, thereby threatening many of these species. And the border wall traverses private property. And some question to the constitutionality of the barrier will end up in court.
The money would be better spent on the agency whose responsibility it is to control immigration.
Building a wall is the same as slamming the door in somebody’s face. Mexico is a friend, not an enemy from whom the United States needs protection.
The wall, or fence, should not be built.

RedRage had this to say...
..."You are so clueless. Show me poor white men in mobile home parks that are willing to work as hard as these illegals?"...
Now who is clueless? You are so intent on proving a point that you miss so many things. There "are" white men that are willing and able to work as hard as illegals. You cannot say that there are "none" unless you know them all personally.
I know many white ment that are not scared of work, ones who crew up in the cotton patch and did all the work themselves. No cotton pickers, no hired hell.
Don't assume anything RedRage, cause on this one you are dead wrong.
July 16, 2008 at 4:04 p.m.KUDOS to "swbones" and "tstorm5" for recognizing the responsibilities of aliens stepping on our soil and for recognizing that Mexico is definitely NOT Texas's or America's friend--nor are those citizens who step on it illegally.
July 16, 2008 at 7:48 a.m.I think that the barrier should be built because i am tired of having mexicans come and do all the dirty jobs for next to nothing and they are leaving no jobs for the poor white people who live in mobile home parks. All they do is turn around and take the money back to mexico turn it into PESOS and that screws up our economy. So I think they should stay on their side of the barrier. You don't see us sneaking to their side and trying to lay brick or pour cement all day.

..."If the Native Americans would have built a big fence around the US 550 years ago this country would be much better off today. There would be less racism because we would all be the same color. Everyone is so quick to tell others to go back to their own countries. Do us all a favor and practice what you preach!"...
One problem with what you are saying. It wouldn't be the US, and there wouldn't be anything here except trees, teepees, and warring tribes of Native Americans...which probably would have killed each other out by now.
July 16, 2008 at 12:59 a.m.Hey, but if the thought of that excites you, more power to ya.
Sw.. come on!! be a sport... there is enough room on this Gods Green Earth for everyone ...no one tells us anything when we go to Acapulco and buy beachfront property for dirt cheap..and make exclusive Condos for the American Tourists and whomever wants to enjoy the beauty, serenity, and gorgeous views..wink)wink)...So, why get all worked over alittle space .. come on scoot over and play nice..hehhehe
July 15, 2008 at 6:41 a.m.Huck,
It is.
It already is.
All men are. And finally
NO. Only Citizens have the Right to be here. Legal Aliens have limited rights. Illegal Aliens have no Right to be in The United States of America.
July 15, 2008 at 6:17 a.m.You can be taken out by a Citizen with a shotgun if you are caught looting your neighbors house.
Isnt the Great U. S. of A. supposed to be a diverse country? "Let Freedom Ring".. "All Men Are Created Equal" etc etc.. Why are we fighting do we or do we not all have a right to be here..regardless..and The only one that put you here is the only one that can take you out.. I wonder who that could be..I think its the Dear Lord he said, Love One Another... Is that even possible?
July 14, 2008 at 10:22 p.m.Truth: What a HS response. "Native"Americans were sleeping in the dirt, killing each other, and feasting off ticks they pulled off each other. I don't think they had the stamina to build a fence.
I don't support a border fence, but your argument has the merits of a three year olds finger painting.
You be one dumb-dumb american.

But TH, the "Native Americans" weren't from here originally either.
July 14, 2008 at 9:30 p.m.They came across on a land bridge from the Aleutian Islands, and one theory has that some settlers came from the Pacific Islands by raft to help populate South America.
Animal rights activists could argue that those original "natives" came here and displaced REALLY native populations of animals through hunting and even eating their food. Animals have rights too, according to them.
One could argue that the "native Americans" should have stayed in their own land and not migrated to this continent.
If the Native Americans would have built a big fence around the US 550 years ago this country would be much better off today. There would be less racism because we would all be the same color. Everyone is so quick to tell others to go back to their own countries. Do us all a favor and practice what you preach!
