A bicyclist was hospitalized Monday after colliding into the side of a city utilities truck at the intersection of Park Avenue and Jecker Street.
Lt. Greg Najvar of the Victoria Fire Department, said the man, who is in his mid-50s, was riding his bike east on Park Avenue when he collided with the city truck that was at the stop sign on Jecker Street.
The man, who’s name is not being released by police yet, was taken to Citizens Medical Center with a possible leg injury. The injury is not serious, Najvar said.
“He looks stable and there is no life-threatening injuries at this point. We’re just doing some precautionary things in case it may be a more serious leg injury,” he added.
Najvar also said he is not sure at this time if the truck was moving at the time of the accident.
A man at the scene who said he was involved in the collision declined to comment.
This is the second vehicle/bicycle wreck since Friday, when a 29-year-old bicyclist was hit by a truck on Laurent Street.
“I guess more people are on bikes these days trying to save gas,” Najvar said. “There are more motorcycles, bicycles and people walking on the streets and we’re so used to people in vehicles, we don’t always look for people on bicycles.”
Tom Gregg, another bicyclist, happened upon the scene shortly after the man was injured, he said.
“He kept trying to get up and I told him he shouldn’t move,” he said. “He kept asking ‘How’s my bike? How’s my bike?’”
Gregg added that he has been an avid biker for close to 40 years.
“We’re out here on the road every day, trying to save money and we try to be safe, but drivers need to be more aware,” he said. “There are more and more bicyclists these days with the gas situation getting worse and worse. But if it’s not safe to ride a bike, what else can we do?”

I think you are going to be on a bike, you should not be trying to play chicken with a moving vehicle. We dont need to build a bike lane, we just need people with more common sense. Before anyone buys a bike they should be given an I.Q. test to see if they qualify to ride a bike.
July 16, 2008 at 1:44 a.m.It could be time for Victoria to designate bicycle routes for future safety. I'm thinking I may have to start riding a bike, my grandkids, too. School will start soon and many kids could be in danger of being hit by a vehicle. Not to mention the ones that have to walk to school. Please, everyone watch out for these people.
