Four down and one to go.
The Victoria school board has awarded contracts for four of the five new schools being built.
The board is expected to award this contract Thursday at its regular meeting.
The new schools are a part of the $159 million bond that was voters approved in May 2007.
Included in the bond are two new high schools, a new middle school, two elementary schools, an addition to Crain Middle School, capital improvements and a district events center.
Ron Leach, the district’s chief operations officer, urged the board not to award the east high school contract at the July 8 special meeting. He explained he was still negotiating figures and deductions with Prime Contractors, Inc. out of Houston, one of two companies that submitted bids for the east school.
The west site high school and middle school contract were awarded to Don Krueger Construction of Victoria for $61 million at the July 8 meeting.
The two elementary school contracts were awarded at the June 19 regular board meeting for $19 million to Krueger Construction.
Groundbreaking for the elementary school on 4208 Lone Tree Road will be Wednesday, Aug. 6 at 9 a.m. and the elementary on 2654 Mallette will be Thursday, Aug. 7 at 9 a.m.
The deadline for opening the schools is August 2010.
The next school board meeting will be Thursday at 6 p.m. at the VISD Administration building.
