A.D. Powers, the Chicago auctioneer, is impressed with the wonderful possibilities for development here. While Mr. Powers is not an old man, he has had an immense amount of experience in the disposition of real estate in a number of states and his opinion of a place is worth considering. In speaking of Victoria and surrounding territory Mr. Powers said: Yes, Victoria looks good to me. This is my first visit, and I am surprised to find such a splendid city, with its extraordinary financial backing, and at the same time to find such a small amount of trading in city property. ‘I believe an area of activity is about to begin and no one knows where it will lead the city. Victoria is ripe for it.”

Victoria County’s first bale of cotton for the season was ginned at 1:47 p.m. yesterday at Bloomington Cooperative Gin. Grown by Luther K. Maroney on his farm near Bloomington, the 576-pound bale was turned out from 1,800 pounds of seed cotton. Seed weight was 1,130 pounds. Variety was Northern Star and planting date was March 5. Maroney planned to bring in another bale from the same planting before end of the day. the bale’s grade and staple were middling one-inch, or, as A. H. Hodde, gin manager, quipped. “You can say it’s white as snow.”

Seladonia and Francisco Martinez missed by only three hours bringing in the first bale. They were growers of a 593-pound bale produced on the Buhler Farm at Lone Tree. It was ginned at 5 p.m. by Herman Pargac at DaCosta Ginnery.

The National Weather Service through 7 p.m. Friday, had recorded 7.12 inches of rainfall in the past three days, including 3.33 inches since midnight Thursday, and more was in sight. There was some good news, however. The easterly wave in the Gulf of Mexico - which has produced over eight inches of rainfall in the area generally since Monday - was breaking up, and while a 60 percent probability of rain was predicted for Saturday and 40 percent for Saturday night, the forecast for Sunday was for partly cloudy with only a “chance” of more showers.

When 19-year-old Bret Baldwin arrived in Switzerland last August as an American Field Service exchange student he carried with him an official proclamation signed by Victoria County Judge Norman Jones. The proclamation, written as a greeting, was presented by Baldwin to the mayor of Brig, Switzerland, Dr. Werner Perrig. For his return trip 11 months later back to Victoria, Perrig gave Baldwin a book to be presented to the judge and that’s just what Baldwin did Friday afternoon at the county courthouse. “It’s a book on the largest castle in Switzerland,” explained Baldwin, the son of former Victoria County Commissioner and Mrs. Gene Martin.
