It was their day off but still they toiled away under the hot sun. Hammering, measuring, lifting, cutting; four volunteers of the Home Depot Team sweated away their free time all for the good of the community.

On Wednesday, the store manager, along with three employees, replaced the McNamara House Museum’s aging front steps as part of their company’s mission to give back to the community.

“It’s one of our core values,” store manager Jim Smithson. “We go out into the community and just try to help out wherever we can.”

Smithson said he was taking a tour with his wife of the McNamara House when he noticed a few things that needed repair. He approached museum director Denise Roussel to see if he and his team could help and Roussel said she jumped at the chance.

“We are thrilled they have chosen us to help with this vital project. The McNamara House is the oldest museum in Victoria and we really need to maintain the building to keep its history alive,” she said.

The McNamara House was built in 1876 as a residence for the McNamara family. In 1960 it was turned into a museum, Roussel said. Over the past four years, the museum has been repairing and renovating the building little by little, but they still need all the help they can get, she added.

“The museum is critical to our mission of touching people through art and history and we plan on it being here for a long, long time,” she said. “But funding does become an issue and it’s been a slow process.”

According to Smithson, the Home Depot Team donates their time, manpower and materials of up to $250 to help maintain and fix community places such as the McNamara House.

“I like giving back to the community,” employee April McDonald, 19, said. “In any way I can.”
