There was some sadness and disappointment when the rally fell short, but everyone on Victoria West kept their head up when the reality of a season-ending loss set in.

“I thought we could do it until the end,” Victoria West starting pitcher Brayden Blanton said. “At the end we couldn’t pull it out but we were right there.”

Victoria West’s run in the Section 4, Junior League tournament came to an end on Thursday with a 6-3 loss to Alvin at Riverside Stadium.

Alvin won 18-8 on Wednesday to force the game, and scored five runs in the fifth inning to win.

“We played great, we just fell apart in that inning,” Victoria West’s Braylin Kasper said. “They scored the five runs, but we held them the rest of the game. Errors hurt us there and then we couldn’t come back.”

Alvin advances to the state tournament with the win after coming up with six hits in the game. Alvin starting pitcher Jacob Campbell reached the pitch limit in the game and was taken out in the seventh inning after striking out five and limiting West to two runs.

Anthony Cantu scored West’s first run of the game after hitting a double. He scored on a Drew Vepronne ball which Alvin committed an error on. Jacob Garza and Blanton each added singles for West.

Victoria plays at noon on Saturday at Tivy High School against Kerrville at the American Legion Baseball Junior State Championship.

The championship game of the tournament is at 12:30 p.m. on Monday at Tivy.

The winner of the tournament advances to the national championship to be played in Blair, Neb.
