The Victoria Transportation Company was organized yesterday with the following officers and directors: H.E. Rathbone, president and manager; R. L. Daniel, vice-president; L. F. Haller, secretary and treasurer; Theo. Buhler and Oscar Roos. Messrs. Rathbone and Buhler went to Port Lavaca today for the purpose of placing the steamer Naulahka, recently purchased, in the summer excursion trade between Port Lavaca and Palacios, until the work has progressed sufficiently to enable her to enter in the Guadalupe freight and passenger trade. The Naulahka, in addition to her freighting possibilities, has accommodations for about 75 passengers and will be immediately fitted for that service. Her two 36-H.P. Wolverine engines assure sufficient power to make her a factor in the manipulation of freight and the business community of Victoria is eagerly looking forward to the time when there shall be an improvement in the traffic conditions which has militated against the general progress of the most influential and richest community embraced in the territory between Houston and San Antonio.

Dallas: Col. Robert B. Collins, commander of James Connally Air Force Base at Waco, was breezing down the highway 60 miles south of Dallas yesterday morning when the radio in his car brought him a special announcement: “Col. Collins, your wife is in Dallas at the services station.” He thought she was sleeping in the back seat of the family car. He had failed to notice that she had gotten out of the car while it was being filled with gas.

A warning to local residents to be especially on the lookout for snakes after the heavy rains last week was made Sunday. David Gilsler, resident of the Lower Mission Valley Road, about 13 miles from Victoria, his brother Don, and Don’s son, Darin, killed nine copperheads one coral snake and one chicken snake in a 30-minute period Sunday morning while cutting some grass. Gisler theorized that the rains flooded the snakes out of their holes and noted that one was killed within about 50 feet of his home. He said that one of the copperheads measured 29 inches, and added that it was the largest he had ever seen. The coral snake was about 20 inches long, while the chicken snake measured about five feet in length.
Chattanooga, Tenn. (AP) – A Texas man has been arrested for allegedly using a bogus $50 bill to pay for $2.30 worth of groceries, police said Sunday. Authorities said Peter Ramsey Thomson, 48, of Austin was arrested Saturday after grocery store manager Tom Kaser, 31, followed him to a nearby fast-food restaurant and called police. Police and U. S. Secret Service agents later found about $8,700 in other counterfeit money at an undisclosed location in Chattanooga.
The William H. and Bertha Ruschhaupt reunion was held July 9 at the Weesatche Community Center. Forty-three family members attended. Sixteen of the family members present had the Ruschhaupt name.
