Q: The newspaper is carrying ads for school supplies already! I want to take advantage of the sales, but how do I find out what my children will need for school this year?

A: The generic school supply list for elementary schools is posted on the VISD Web site at www.visd.com. A few middle schools have specific school supply lists. Those lists are posted on the Web site, as well.

Q: How will I know when my daughter’s school will have a meet and greet the teacher day?

A: Most schools will send out post cards to parents letting them know of the sneak peek or registration schedules. The school will use the most recent address on file, so if you have moved, the card may not get to you.

Information is also posted on the VISD Web site. We have a one-stop information center for back to school information on the VISD website. Click the large button labeled “Back2School” in the middle of the VISD homepage. This button links you to a variety of information that parents and students will find helpful in getting ready for the August 25 start of the new school year.

Q: Higher prices and a cut in income have really put a strain on our home budget this year. I’ve heard about financial help that may be available to my family to help with school meal prices. Can you tell me more about it?

A: VISD participates in the federal school lunch program. This allows students access to free or reduced-price breakfasts and lunches if the family meets specific income guidelines. When you register your child for school or on the first day of school, you will receive an application form for the free or reduced price meal program. You will need to provide information on the number of members in your family and total family income.

As the start of the school year approaches, the applications will also be available on line at the Back2School page on our website.

Based on family size and income, your child may be eligible for no-cost meals or reduced cost meals. The reduced price cost for breakfast is 30 cents and 40 cents for lunch.
