Q: We are planning to take our dog on trips with us. Are their any summer safety tips we should know about?

A: Dogs can be susceptible to the heat just like us. They should have plenty of fresh water and shade available. When your dog requires exercise you should wait until the evening when it is cooling off or early in the morning.

Overexertion in the heat can cause heat stroke. Dogs pant to cool themselves. Brachycephalic dogs, flat faced dogs, can not pant effectively because of their anatomy. They should be indoor dogs.

If you are taking a trip to the beach, your dog can sunburn as easily as you. You should limit their time in the sun and apply sunscreen 30 minutes prior to sun exposure. Sun block needs to be applied to ears, noses and any area that is not protected by hair. Dog sunscreens are available at pet shops or through your veterinarian. Your dog can burn their pads on hot surfaces. At the beach they should be limited on the hot sand.

If they want to cool off in the water be careful they do not drink saltwater. The salt content can cause vomiting or diarrhea. The salt and sand can be harsh on the skin and coat, make sure you bathe them after your day at the beach.

Swimming is a great summer activity. When a dog is introduced to a new pool, show them the stairs and be sure they know how to use them. Pond and lakes are very tempting to dogs. If they are swimming in standing water they are susceptible to an intestinal parasite called giardia. Your veterinarian can check a fecal to determine if they have any intestinal parasites. Talk with your veterinarian if you have any summer safety questions.
