It may seem like it’s hard to find things to laugh at these days, but Theatre Victoria is going to make it much easier this season.
Chock full of comedies, musicals and farces, the goal this season is to provide an escape from troubled times, theater director Scott Mohon said.
“This season is all about making people laugh. I think we all need that right now,” he said. “With the world being in the state that it is, going to the theater is a great place to escape for a couple of hours.”
The 2008-2009 season kicks off Friday with the musical “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” Starring John Michael Urbano in the lead role, the show boasts a cast of 38 actors, including 15 children.
“We picked this play to open the season because it’s bright, it’s fun, it’s catchy and it’s family-oriented,” Mohon said. “It’s a timeless story for all ages.”
With music by Andrew Lloyd Weber and lyrics by Tim Rice, the show follows the Biblical story of Joseph and is set to music and dancing that ranges from country-western to bubble-gum pop.
“It’s so much fun, I can’t wait for everyone to see this show,” choreographer Chelsea Hengst, 19, said. “Everyone has been working so hard learning the routines and it looks so good.”
This is the first time the theater has put on this production and as such, a special surprise is in store for audiences, Mohon said. Thanks to a donation by Louise O’Connor, intelligent lighting is being installed for the show by lighting designer Patrick McLaughlin.
“It’s like rock concert lighting with moving, colorful lights,” Mohon said. “It’s something we’ve never done before and it’s going to make the show a do-no-miss hit.”
