Victoria residents weren’t flocking to the stores Monday in preparation for the approaching tropical storm, which was threatening to become a hurricane.

But that could change now that Dolly is in the Gulf of Mexico and could be headed toward Texas.

“They’re going to see a hurricane and on Tuesday, I guarantee you, we will have lines,” said Julian Soliz with McCoy’s Building Supply. “They’re going to be buying plywood, tape, batteries and plastic. Nails and screws will be real big.”

The store is well supplied with the items needed for hurricane preparation, he said.

“But we have restock centers where we can get stock from overnight, if we need to,” Soliz said.

Ray Shannon at Lentz Hardware said business hadn’t picked up there yet because of the storm.

“Usually it’s a last minute thing, with people running in,” he said. “As the storm gets closer in and they can predict a little better what path it will take, people will start looking for anchors to secure the plywood on the windows, plastic sheeting and earth anchors to secure buildings.”

Generators will also be in demand, Shannon said.

Colin Keag at Dick’s Food Store said he expects to see an influx of customers beginning today. Some of the more popular items will be water, candles, batteries and canned meat, he said.

“I just got a phone call that said we can make a special order,” Keag said. “So we will probably be ordering more water and things.”

Jay Page at Target said it’s possible many people still didn’t know about Dolly, which might explain why business hadn’t increased.
