He rode west, like an old-fashioned cowboy, before police arrested a 63-year-old man on suspicion of public intoxication.
John Edward Battles was “very unsteady on his feet and having to lean on his horse so as not to fall over,” according to an arrest report. He was arrested after 11 p.m. Saturday.
“We saw a horse, but it was kind of late,” Gaicnto Sartuche, 83, said, who lives near the intersection of Liberty and Water streets. Sartuche told his son the man riding down the middle of the street looked like a cowboy.
“He didn’t bother anybody,” Sartuche said.
He’s lived in the area for about 40 years, and said people used to ride horses through the neighborhood more often.
But now a man riding a grey horse down the road late at night is an oddity, he said.
Battles told officers he drank two beers, according to the police report.
A friend took the horse home.

I guess that would never happen it Crystal City Texas because I have an Old friend there that goes to the local Cantina on his horse and ..well he has a heck of ole time and raises cane and yells out some Gritos and gets really drunk..his friends pack him back on his horse tie his feet to the stirrups and his hands to the horn and he lays forward and they swat the horse and the horse .. well he knows his way home.. and his wife well she waits for her husband because the horse goes up to the backdoor and neighs... to let her know ... his owner is on his back..ahahahhahahaaa.. I didnt believe it either but I saw it ...happen..

I thought it was an old tradition to go to the "saloon" and get your drink on and let the horse take you home.
If you can get arrested for drunken riding, the people on the trailrides are in serious trouble.....
