A dozen Victoria-area archers, all members of the South Texas Archery Club, traveled to Oklahoma City this month for the 2008 Junior National Archery Championships.
The three-day competition consisted of two days of shooting at two distances each day and then a series of head-to-head matches for the ultimate title on the final day. Ten of the youngsters earned top-10 finishes in the national competition.
Hunter Barthels finished seventh in the 144-arrow competition and fifth in the head-to-head Olympic-round matches.
Taylor Sizemore earned an eighth-place finish and a sliver medal in the Olympic round. Thomas Dentler finished 11th and 10th. Clayton DeBord was eighth and fifth, while Tyler Janota had a fifth- and 10th-place finish.
Bryce Brown placed 15th in both events, while Kayla DeBord earned a third-place finish and gold medal. Allison Williams was 10th and earned a bronze in the head-to-head matches and fellow cub archer Christina Haynes finished 14th in both events.
Bowman archers Elizabeth Haynes, Heather Barthels, and Holly GasKamp finished fifth, seventh and eighth, respectively, in the 144-arrow match. The bowmen do not shoot the Olympic round.
Many of the club’s archers travelled to Austin last weekend for the Texas State Archery Association championships.
Next month, Kayla DeBord, Jory Schroeder, Allison Williams, Clayton DeBord, Hunter Barthels, Heather Barthels and Tyler Janota will be traveling to Colorado Springs, Colo., to participate in the National Target Championships. All but Heather will be trying to earn a position on the Junior World team that will travel to Turkey in October for the Junior World Archery Championships held every other year.
