Editor, the Advocate:

Let’s not elect our next president on just the color of his skin. Let’s make sure he is qualified. To be qualified, the person must have a background of listening to people who are unbiased, not prejudiced and love America because of its diversity.

This is the right time for us to think about and maybe elect a black president. But I am sure that with Barack Obama’s background, 20 years of listening to the Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s preaching, he is not qualified. Obama disassociated himself from the Rev. Wright’s church and the speakers in that congregation. The things said there must have rubbed off on both him and his wife, especially when she said it was the first time she was proud of America. The Rev. Wright himself said Obama is just playing politics. We don’t need a person just playing politics. We need a person with principles.

At the present time, I would hope that retired Gen. Colin Powell would consider being the vice presidential candidate. He has already proved his loyalty by all those years in the military, and his secretary of state and other civic endeavors.

To me, a McCain/Powell ticket would be great. We would have two men who have tasted defeat in the Vietnam War as have I. Whenever McCain would leave office, Powell would be a great president with all of that experience, and being a black man he would fit perfectly. A McCain/Powell ticket would give the war effort in Iraq and Afghanistan new power. We would not be stopping the war and thus forgetting about 9/11 just so the liberal democrats could pay for votes via the welfare system. I still remember all those people evacuating from Saigon by helicopter from a rooftop; it was very painful. I do not want our country to continue being a paper tiger, as the Chinese put it.

To John McCain, I say speak to retired Gen. Powell and ask him to be your vice presidential running mate. Both of you have served your country honorably. And now I ask both of you to serve it once more with honor, as we need you badly.

Wayne Johns, USN retired

  • The author would be surprised if he knew that Colin Powell was advising both camps, and Powell hinted that it would not be out of the question for him to endorse Barack Obama, and perhaps be a member of his cabinet.
He could not be a serious candidate as VP on either ticket, because of the lies he presented to the UN in preparation for the ill advised invasion of Iraq.Although Powell was duped and he apologized later, the reporters would continue to hound him, making him a distraction to any campaign.

  • Why are you guys on the right regurgitating the same crap you heard back in March on Sean Hannity. Taking people out of context to please your views of that person does not make you more of an expert on that person. It makes you sound like a misinformed backwoods idiot. Give it up already! It did not work the first time, it certainly won't work this time. Time for change, I hope you will accept it.
