It’s perhaps one of the most complicated and drawn out relationships ever. Over nine seasons, the X-Files creative team toyed with fans over the relationship status of FBI agents Dana Scully and Fox Mulder.

Co-workers? Partners? Friends? Lovers?

When the show began in 1992, the two were almost enemies at first, with Mulder believing he had been partnered up with Scully so she could spy on him.

By the second season, however, their relationship had solidified and the two characters formed a bond that was seemingly unbreakable.

As the seasons progressed, writers on the show kept up the palpable sexual tension by downplaying the romantic aspect of Mulder and Scully’s relationship. And then every once in awhile, generally in a life or death situation, they’d let that tension pop back up.

For instance, there was the time they almost kissed. And then the time they almost kissed but something happened right before they locked lips. Oh, and then there was the time they almost FREAKIN’ kissed but didn’t yet again.

Eventually, however, the creators hinted at that a sexual relationship had begun between the two and then they hinted heavily that a sexual relationship had developed. In fact, when Scully became pregnant, it was widely believed that Mulder was the father.

And so now here we are in 2008 and the question must be asked.

Will Mulder and Scully finally get together for good in “The X-Files: I Want to Believe?”

Longtime fans of the show would like nothing better, considering they’ve waited 15 years for this union. However, knowing how creator Chris Carter likes to toy with his audiences’ emotions, there’s a very good chance he could still leave them hanging.

And if that’s the case, Mr. Carter, I’d watch out. You may have some rogue X-Files fans slashing your tires.
