Brandon Proctor of Victoria is the kind of big brother you want around. On Thursday, the 11-year-old saved his baby brother from an 18-inch grass snake that had crawled into the infant’s playpen.

Brandon’s father, Duane Proctor, said the 7-month-old baby was taking a nap in his playpen in the living room while the rest of the family ate lunch in the dining room. As they were finishing up, Brandon went to check on his brother when he saw a snake crawling over the baby.

“He immediately grabbed the baby and started jumping and hollering,” Proctor said. “My first thought was that it was a piece of string or something and Brandon was overreacting, but sure enough I saw the snake circling around the playpen. It was crazy. The chances of getting a snake in your house are like 99 to 1, and then to have a snake in the baby’s bed is even further out there.”

Proctor added that he caught the snake and threw it over the fence outside, but the real hero of the day was Brandon.

“My wife and I are very proud of him. Honestly, my first thought would be that Brandon would run because of his young age,” he said. “But his first reaction was to get the baby. He did a good job.”

Proctor added that he’s proud to know that if something else happens, he knows Brandon is going to take care of his younger siblings first, which also includes 2-year-old twin sisters and a 4-year-old sister.

  • First of all, Brandon did an amazing thing. To all of you who are belittling his act: How was an 11 year old supposed to know what kind of snake he saw crawling on his baby brother? All he knew was that there was a threat present, and he immediately reached out to save someone else instead of running like most of us would. Of course, we all know that grass snakes are not a threat to people, but that snake could have easily been something poisonous.
Secondly, anyone who has enough time in their life to sit around on the Victoria Advocate website waiting for stories to come out so that you can criticize them needs to re-examine themselves. Just because you find comfort in belittling others so that you may feel more superior than an eleven year old, doesn't mean you need to do it publicly so the child can see it. We should be celebrating the fact that this child is an outstanding family member because we need more people like that in the world. When children are young, they either make a choice to help others and be positive or they can go drastically in the other way. You should be helping him and his family celebrate this positivity.
Grow up, and just because you think your glass is half empty, don't teach an innocent child to think his is anything but half full.

  • This is a very brave and wonderful thing this child did. Each of you IDIOTS that post negative comments on POSITIVE things need your head examined. That is why our world is the way it is and everyday I talk to rude nasty kids and i know who taught them to be that way... I am also happy to know there are normal sweet loving people in this world that post positive things to make up for all the IDIOTS....

  • swbones--shame on you! This little kid is looking at these posts and feeling good about whast he's done, and you go and poop on his good deed. Not everyone who is a hero is running around with a gun in another country...
Thinksalot--just stop thinking.  It's not working for you.
It doesn't matter if the snake was harmless or not, it was indeed a very brave act by this kid. He should feel like a hero. Way to go!

This child did a wonderful thing by saving his baby brother and deserves to be recognized for his bravery.

Makes me wonder if some of you actually have a life.To post such negative remarks on an article that has to do with an 11 year old child and his infant brother is ridiculous and so uncalled for.

  • Great human interest story.
All of you who are acting like this isn't important, remember the boys age. For someone so young, he did a great thing. Most kids would have went screaming to their mama's and not thought to grab the baby and get him out of harms way first. It really doesn't matter if it was a grass snake or not, to the little boy it was a danger to his brother and he acted in a heroic manner.

  • That's nothing. I once saved my family from a giant cockroach. It was as big as a turtle and it could FLY! It didn't make it over the fence though.

  • Awww! What a sweet story and an even sweeter picture!

Brandon, you did a great thing and should be proud of yourself! Everyone should have a wonderful and caring big brother just like you!

  • I loved the picture. RG did a great job! The boys are special together.
I want to add, as a little side item, that grass snakes are not a threat to anyone. I remember when my sister picked up a "rubber" snake and it started to crawl up her arm. She was shocked, cried and panicked, even. My grandfather, took the green snake and threw it in a tree. It taught us a lesson. Not all snakes are to be feared.
I did love the story and I'm sure that the boy's father did not kill snake. Certainly, he threw it over the fence, alive.  The father was a hero, too. Thanks, April for the sweet story.
