La Ward Cellular customers have until Aug. 31 to take their phones to be reprogrammed or risk losing their numbers, company Vice President Jackie Dukes said on Thursday.
The company pushed back the deadline from its original July 31 cut-off after negotiating with AT&T, he said.
Cingular – now AT&T – had provided La Ward Cellular’s switch for several years, but notified the company about a year and-a-half ago that it would no longer provide the service.
AT&T cited “a contractual relationship that is in transition” for the change in an e-mail from company spokeswoman Jodi Bart.
Customers may take their phones to either of La Ward Cellular’s two locations – 6605 N. Navarro St. in Victoria or 12991 state Highway 172 in La Ward – for the reprogramming.
It takes about 10 to 15 minutes, Dukes said, and customers can keep both their phones and their numbers.
