This Little Red Riding Hood knows a trick or two.
Carlie, a 4-year-old Pembroke Welsh Corgi, strutted around in her red dress for the costume contest, but the judges thought her a better trickster. With the help of owner and mom Kim Green, Carlie performed six tricks in 10 seconds for the Christmas in July contest in the Victoria Mall on Saturday. Just Dogs! Gourmet sponsored the event and provided photos with Santa.
Fourteen dogs entered the show to benefit Pets Are Worth Saving, which spays and neuters dogs and cats for people with low or no income. President Cindy Schneider estimated the event raised $400. If someone lives in Victoria County and makes less than $25,000, PAWS can help, she added.
She told some of the couple hundred spectators how 4,200 animals were euthanized in Victoria in 2007.
“The only problem most of the animals have is they just didn’t have a home,” Schneider said. “It’s a shame.”
Carlie and Green try to participate in all events that benefit animals, Green said. Rescuing animals touches close to home.
Two years ago, Green adopted a Corgi off the streets of Ohio who was emaciated and wary around people. She named the 7-year-old dog Buggles.
“He was in pretty bad shape when I got him,” Green, a registered nurse at Citizens Medical Center, said.
Now, Buggles loves humans, attends obedience classes and performs tricks. Rescue animals can make great pets, but need consistency and work, she added.
“He’s just a happy boy,” she said. “Any dog you get, it’s like raising a good child. You have to put the time into it.”
