Victoria Country Club assistant pro Joe Mitchell Jr. posted an opening-round 71 Monday and was in a three-way tie for the lead at the STPGA TaylorMade-adidas Assistant’s Championship at The Club of Sonterra in San Antonio.

The final round of the 36-hole event will be today with the winner and a number of additional golfers advancing to the national PGA TaylorMade-Adidas Golf Assistant’s Championship, to be held Oct. 30-Nov. 2, 2008, at The PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Mitchell was tied with Brian Bohlig of Trinity and Philip Miranda of Austin.

Toby Grubert of Katy and formerly of Yoakum, carded a 76, while Brandt Kieschnick of Huntsville and formerly of Bay City, had an 80.
