Q: I’m a nurse in Victoria. I’d like to do more with my career, but I don’t know where to start. How can I get more information about my options?
A: The University of Houston-Victoria Nursing Forum on Aug. 7 will help people interested in nursing, nurses and nursing students learn more about possible career options.
Two sessions, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and from 6 to 8:30 p.m., will be offered by the School of Nursing to accommodate people’s schedules. Both sessions will be in the Alcorn Auditorium inside the University West building, 3007 N. Ben Wilson St.
UHV faculty and area nurses will talk about different opportunities within nursing and how they launched their careers in trauma, management, advanced practice, women’s health, education and other areas. Information about the School of Nursing’s Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing, RN to Master of Science in Nursing, and MSN programs will also be provided.
The event is free, and refreshments will be served. Those interested in attending should RSVP by Thursday, July 31, by calling 361-570-4298. Walk-ins are welcome. For more information, call School of Nursing recruiter Tammy Neeley Whatley at 361-570-4297.
Q: I recently read an article about UHV possibly becoming a four-year university and learned that UHV currently offers junior- and senior-level courses and master’s degree classes. Does this mean all of UHV’s students are from local community colleges?
A: Not at all. In addition to its Victoria location, UHV is the managing partner of the UH System’s teaching centers at Sugar Land and Cinco Ranch. Students can take face-to-face classes, or for students wanting to save on gas money, UHV offers a variety of degrees online for students living anywhere.
Our students transfer from a number of community colleges including Austin Community College, Houston Community College, Coastal Bend College, Wharton County Junior College, Blinn College and The Victoria College. We have transfer agreements with many of these colleges. The Transfer Plan pages on the UHV Web site are designed to help students evaluate the freshman- and sophomore-level courses they already have completed or need to complete at a community college before transferring to UHV. You can view the Transfer Plan pages at www.uhv.edu/oar /Transfer_Plans.asp.
