CUERO – Former Victoria Police officer and current Cuero Police Lt. Chris Hernandez has been named interim police chief in Cuero effective Thursday.

“I am excited about the opportunity. I have a life-long goal of one day of being police chief here and being interim chief I think takes me one step closer,” said Hernandez, a Cuero native.

Interim city manager Marie Gelles made the appointment Monday.

“Lt. Hernandez is highly thought of by his fellow officers and the community, and I feel will make a fine interim chief,” Gelles said.

Hernandez will step in as current Police Chief Glenn Mutchler retires and moves on as an investigator with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services.

“Lt. Hernandez is a dedicated law enforcement officer, and he strives for perfection in every task he undertakes,” Mutchler said.

Hernandez began his law enforcement career with the DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office as a jailer. He joined the Victoria Police Department as a patrol officer in 1999 where he worked through October 2002 when he joined the Cuero Police Department as the DARE officer. He was promoted to lieutenant in 2004.
