Avery Greene could ride a horse before she could even walk. She can now do both, but if given the choice she would ride.

Greene has been in rodeos since she was 5 and will be in the spotlight this week at the Texas Youth Rodeo Finals after winning the TYRA pageant this year. Among other things, winning the pageant makes her queen of the rodeo and one of the most recognizable faces at the show.

“I think it’s going to be fun and exciting walking around being the queen,” she said. “I get to carry flags around all week. I was really excited when I found out I was going to be queen and now the rodeo is here.”

Greene, who will be a freshman at Industrial this year, is looking forward to the rodeo being held today through Saturday at the J.B. Wells Rodeo Arena in Gonzales and the responsibility that come with it.

The rodeo will showcase youth in bull riding, steer wrestling, tie-down, barrel racing, bulldogging and other rodeo events. The Texas Youth Rodeo Association will also present scholarships to its members who graduated from high school and will award prizes to the winners.

“It’s a great honor for them to win the state championship,” said TYRA’s Mo Cox. “It’s a great rodeo and is a great place for the kids and the families to come together.”

Greene will compete in barrel racing and poles during the rodeo. She’s competing in barrel racing at 5 p.m. today and will also ride on Friday at 1 p.m. She’s hoping to make it to the finals on Saturday and win even more prizes.

“I really want to win,” she said. “It’s a really good rodeo with a lot of people coming to it.”

The Texas Youth Rodeo Association Finals is expecting over 200 competitors at this year’s event. The rodeo brings a close to the TYRA season which has been running all year. The rodeo will also have a live auction and dance along with tack bingo.

For Greene and the rest of the kids competing the rodeo is serious business though. They want to win saddles, buckles and other prizes, but above that participating in rodeo is what gets them going.

“The adrenaline rush is the best part of rodeo for me,” Greene said. “I just love competing and trying to be the best.”
