Walking into the Hardback Cafe, Susan Jimenez and Angelica Ortiz garner more than a few stares as they sit down at a table. Dressed in almost all black, complete with hair ribbons, elbow length gloves and stockings, the young women hardly notice, however.
“We get lots of looks but we endure it. We get through it,” Ortiz, 20, said. “Basically, this is just our way to express ourselves.”
It’s called Lolita fashion, and its followers, like Ortiz and Jimenez, 22, are called Lolita Girls.
It’s become a common sight in Japan. Young girls and women walk down the street dressed up in almost doll-like clothes, complete with fluffy skirts, giant bows, bloomers and knee-high socks.
Originating in Japan in the 1990s, the Lolita look combines the fashion of Victorian-era children’s clothing with costumes from the 18th century Rococo period in France. Through the years, many different sub-genres of the style emerged, including Sweet Lolita, which incorporates lots of pink and lace, Punk Lolita and even Country Lolita.
And the style is now gaining a following in Victoria.
Valli Bassano, a 22-year-old nurse at DeTar Hospital, discovered Lolita fashion about seven years ago. Although she said when she gets dressed up in public the reaction is usually mixed, she rarely gets a rude reaction.
“I think most people are just curious and they don’t know much about it. It’s just fashion, a hobby,” she said. “You’re only young once, you only live once, so why not?”
Somewhat of a negative stigma surrounds the style due to a misconception about its name, Bassano said.
“There is a stigma about the word ‘Lolita,’ but in Japan, it doesn’t mean anything sexual at all. Lolita just means little girl and doll-like,” she said. “So that’s why they adapted the name for the fashion, but many Americans still think its a fetish or sexual thing.”
Ortiz and Jimenez echo Bassano’s sentiments.
“It’s not about trying to be sexy or attracting men. We’re not trying to look like clowns or anything like that. Dressing this way makes us feel good,” Jimenez said. “It’s hard to find people who understand.”
The two friends discovered the style back in junior high. Religiously reading the bimonthly American publication, “Gothic & Lolita Bible,” much of their spare time is spent shopping, putting together outfits and catching up on the latest Lolita Girl news from Japan.
“We’re trying to liberate ourselves from a mundane society. We go to work, go home, go to sleep, over and over again and this is our way of dealing with everyday life without going insane,” Ortiz said. “Some people smoke or drink to relieve stress, this is our thing.”
Ortiz added that Lolita fashion has now turned into more of a lifestyle for her and Jimenez.
“Your personality changes when you are dressed Lolita. Your perspective changes. When you’re in Lolita, everything has to be awesome and you can’t have a bad day,” she said.
Closely linked to the world of Anime, video games and the Japanese culture in general, Bassano said, the Lolita fashion is essentially a celebration of the creativity found in Japan.
“I think the reason this style has lasted so long is because people can be as creative as they want with it,” she said. “It’s all about being unique, new ideas and new fashion, and taking those things and making it your own.”

Many Lolita outfits are made up of big, fluffy skirts, petticoats, bloomers, knee high socks and doll-like shoes.
Through the years, many different sub-genres of the style emerged, including Sweet Lolita, which incorporates lots of pink and lace, Punk Lolita and even Country Lolita.
The name Lolita has a negative connotation in some circles in part due to a novel written by Vladmir Nabokov about a man who becomes sexually obsessed with a 12-year-old girl. However, Lolita Girls claim that in Japan, the name means little girl and doll-like.

Comments
bighorn can be used as an example of my previous comments.
September 7, 2008 at 11:57 p.m....and this style of dress still looks like crap, IMO.
Sweet dreams to all
September 7, 2008 at 11:20 p.m.my, my urfullofit, the fact that your offended by my comment, shows me how narrow your mind truly is, such weakness is amusing. bahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!
September 7, 2008 at 11:12 p.m.ps
the only reason why i posted on this topic, was because it's annoying to think we laid this topic so long ago, only to see people still running their mouths about something so trivial.
DUDE,GET OFF OF YOUR HIGH HORSE AND LET THESE GIRLS/POSTERS BE....IF YOU REALLY DIDN'T GIVE A RATS *** THEN YOU WOULDN'T BE POSTING ON THIS TOPIC.....
September 7, 2008 at 8:12 p.m.BULLY!!!!!!
look, i really couldnt give a rat's a$$ as to what you, you're friend or anyone else for that matter regardless of gender, wore. you have your style and i got mine, people with narrow minds will always have the stupidity to criticize you for what you wear, saying it's trashy, slutty
ect. that is the natural order of things, the stupid will open their mouths at times when they really dont need too. the best way you can combat that, is to hold your head high and continue with your business, it's pointless to argue with people of that nature. as long as your okay with what you wear, then who really cares what everyone else thinks?
to myself:im gonna make such a great father one day, sniff, sniff.
September 7, 2008 at 6:49 p.m.i'm sorry, but i just had to defend my friend
September 7, 2008 at 6:03 p.m.i find it annoyingly funny that we can bring a topic from 4 months ago, back to life. people, go back to your knitting.
September 6, 2008 at 9:01 p.m.It amuses me how a lot of people are saying that the Lolita style looks horrible, makes these (beautiful) girls look like whores/floozies/whatever else...To all those people -- do you not see what is considered the "norm" in girl's fashion nowadays? I walk outside, to the mall, and all I see are girls with low-cut shirts, belly shirts, way too short of skirts and thongs hanging out all over the place. Please, do tell me how, compared to that, that these Lolita girls can be called such names? Or did you just mean that they were "different" and choose NOT to follow the current fashion trend of every other girl? Does someone being different from everyone else scare you THAT much? I have loved all of the Lolita styles for many years now and although I have seen some that I consider not the prettiest styles, I still support them and their wearers 100%. I would rather see every girl dressed in Lolita style rather than seeing all of these "fashionable" girls running around with clothes (can I even call it that?) that BARELY cover them. There is nothing wrong with dressing differently, and just because you dress a certain way doesn't mean you want the attention involved in it, either. I am just as likely to walk out of the house wearing a nicely ironed white blouse and skirt as I am to walk out in a pair of TRIPP pants (those ones with the chains), fishnet shirt, and a spiked collar. I don't expect to be treated any different either way, just because I decide I feel comfortable in one pair of pants rather than another on a given day. How you treat people and expect to be treated shouldn't depend on what you are wearing. If it did, I would go up to every girl in the mall that was dressed like a whore and treat her like one. Dressing how one wants to doesn't hurt anyone, so why are you all complaining? By the way, Kitana, I am always on your side, and you are completely adorable and still sound like a chipmunk <3
September 6, 2008 at 7:48 p.m.This is AWESOME! I'm impressed that there are some young folk in Vic that don't succumb to the rest of the young Vic "prep" crowds that wear exclusively AE or Aeropostale. Way to be an individual, don't be a clone! Be different, Be interesting...live your lives, because you only get ONE!
August 29, 2008 at 8:32 p.m.Doggone.....I thought I was going to get a movie and a makeover.....
August 1, 2008 at midnightYou would look beautiful in a tow sack! Don't pay any attention to these boneheads.
July 31, 2008 at 11:58 p.m.NO, not you bighorn. Valli. She must be from the Valley of the Dolls. Cause she is a doll!
Popeye: That's the danger with your assumptions...misguided and poorly applied.
Did you give thought to the fact that I included myself in said group? Nah, because of an ego driven intel can not concieve sarcasm or humor.
Sleep well.
PS: Not a personal attack, just an opinion based on observations of comments of some posters of this board.
July 31, 2008 at 11:54 p.m.Arguing over the internet is pointless because everyone has their own opinion! I'm so busy with work that I just now saw everyone's comments here. Thank you - everyone that had a positive comment to state~ It means a lot!
I rarely post on public blogs of forums for this simple fact: I'm a peaceful person and keep most of my opinions to myself. I am honest, hard working and trustworthy.
I really don't know how to express the way I feel about everyone's bickering. If you have enough time to argue on the interenet, please go do something productive in real life! I have skimmed through some of the comments, and someone stated that I must actually have some kind of intelligence because I am a Registered Nurse. What does intelligence and fashion have anything to do with one another? I'm 22 and a college graduate...I work hard in life for what I want and the things I believe in, and this fashion just happens to be something that represents my style, creativity and the things I enjoy.
I just want to share one message: be kind to others. Where will we go in this world if we bicker over a fashion when there are bigger problems in the world?
Oh~ and that person just might save your life ^.~
July 31, 2008 at 10:03 p.m.(no pun inteded! XD)
I believe:
The "Lolita" thing looks like crap on these young ladies. But it beats the "Goth" deal and the "Ink" deal. (I suppose this means I think's it's better that seduce old men than worship the devil, or self scar themselves?)
I really don't care how they (or you) dress. But I reserve the right to laugh at either of you. Feel free to do the same of me.
I seem to remember "old folks" saying critical things about my long hair (back when I had some).
In ten years, they will all see photos of themselves and laugh, blush, or burn the photos.
People at the VicAd needed something mindless to write and their readers are just the right audience.
Have a wonderful evening!
July 31, 2008 at 7:50 p.m.tstorm, I freaked you out? LOL! My work here is done!
July 31, 2008 at 6:33 p.m.Whoo - hoo! You go Scott!
Ok... I was going to comment earlier, but had other familiar obligations.... now I am going to say it:
Katty (and that is most certainly fitting) you own property in Victoria, which makes you a taxpayer, but I'll be D*MNED if I am going to sit here and let you run your mouth about how awful MY city is! How dare you, a non-resident, come on this forum and tell us we aren't doing anything to change our hopelessly archaic city! You, my dear, don't know what the h3ll you are talking about! All of us, Sailor, Rg, Southtexas, ragman, and to some extent, even the Observer, do what we can to change our town for the better.
I personally, went to the school district last year and TRIED to get them to be more proactive in combating the most serious drug problem we have on campus. I started up a website for parents interested in voicing concerns about the educational programs here in our city. I have donated my time and money to several local charitable organizations. I've written letters to my state Reps and Senators voicing my concerns.
I know that Sailor and a group of people saw what they believed to be wrong doing by our DA, and put their personal lives/careers on the line to stand up and do something about it!
We have people on the local level who were the 1st responders in 2003 when 19 HUMAN BEINGS lost their lives -- many citizens of Victoria went to where the surviviors were bringing food, clothes, toys, whatever to those HUMAN BEINGS.
In 2005, when our city hosted families displaced by Hurricane Katrina, people banded together and donated their time, money, clothing and showed these HUMAN beings some compassion, and caring.
In January, of this year, when a bus overturned, our citizens again banded together to do whatever was needed so that the people STRANDED here, hurt, away from family wouldn't feel so bereft, lonley .... THAT'S MY CITY! THESE ARE MY NEIGHBORS! THIS IS WHAT WE DO! Don't you DARE come on here again, especially after your INHUMANE remarks about illegal immigrants, and tell us our city sucks! YOU don't live here! We're a growing city, but retain enough small town mentality to treat each other with kindness, dignity, warmth and compassion! I don't agree with many people on this forum, but you know what? If they needed my help, I'd be there for them.... THAT'S WHY I LOVE THIS TOWN! Yes, there are people living on the streets here... but so does Houston, Austin, Corpus, San Antonio, Odessa, Lubbock..... I'll also tell you this, our law enforcement officers may be embroilled in a bit of a snafu right now, but WE SUPPORT THEM! (Most of us anyway)
If you find our city so repugnant and our newspaper lacking "professionalism", then don't buy the paper, don't read it, sell your property so you won't have to complain about the "fleecing" of your tax dollars on whatever....
Just DON'T EVER come back on these forums again and blaspheme our character, cuz Lady, you don't know what you are talking about!
(stepping off soap box, back to you Walter)
July 31, 2008 at 5:20 p.m.Lolita Chicas, you rule, well sota. Much to do about nothing. Never mind the floozies, whores, titilating, etc. comments. Some people have perverted minds, especially old farts and broads. You can tell their age by the wording. But you do look cute and provocative.
July 31, 2008 at 5:13 p.m.Just dont dress and dance like these old fools you see in the Woodstock era films. Yep, these were styles of your critics, really stupid looking, circa 1960-70s.
Now, if you Lolita Chicas could get me a LOLITA MOUSTACHE. That would be cool.
I would say, that's a pretty FAIR assessment there Sailor.
July 31, 2008 at 4:53 p.m.I just love internet mudslinging, don't you? No-one knows who you are and you can say whatever you want. Haha. It's even more bizarre that you're speaking to people in your own community. If you were speaking in person, would you be so quick to voice your opinion uninhibited? I know some people probably would... It's still a strange.
July 31, 2008 at 3:35 p.m.That is not fair South Texas I am not doing the name calling. Look at the postings. All I discussed was the article and the dress attire when everyone started throwing rocks. Shesh. A he/she can have no input but can be blamed for it.
July 31, 2008 at 2:30 p.m.Lolita Girls,I apologize to you for some of these posters stupidness.Keep doing what you are doing.
July 31, 2008 at 2:30 p.m.It is time to shut ChattyKatty down....Pray for her/him.
July 31, 2008 at 2:26 p.m.Now,this is when a forum should be shut down! All this nasty name calling is so uncalled for.
July 31, 2008 at 2:18 p.m.what are we arguing about here? what is all this name calling and putting people down for? we are here arguing about a style of dress that certain females are fond of? ive reviewed some of the posts and there are comments about porn, saving people lives, and victoria being a retirement home. im going to take some pleasure in calling out the person who made that last comment. do you honestly believe this town to be a retirement home? if so, then why not get off your oh-so high horse and get your hands dirty to help us change it? insulting the town as a whole is not going to get people to accept your lifestyle. start a business, open a store to support the way you dress, show people the bright side of it rather then letting them see the dark part of it. as for you chatty, you are correct, as a consumer you have the right to demand more of the people who produce the products that you buy, i would suggest you write a letter to the advocate in order to make your concerns known, who knows you might get some support on the matter. or you could just take the easier route and just not buy the advocate. go buy the chronicle for your news, google the news, the choice is yours. i do support you in saying the advocate is running a little low on quality and it would me nice to see the management do something about it. the only thing i buy the advocate for is the funnies and the viewpoints. everyone has the right to their own opinion. lets let this issue die already.
July 31, 2008 at 2:14 p.m.NoBigJ,
Redrage brought it up to me. I could not think why? He accused me of thinking of the industry. Had not even entered my mind...way far from it. If it was for the word floozie then he was wrong on my thoughts. That is not a bigger hole. Sorry no whips and no chains. There are a few dust bunnies.
If there are those of you who think floozie is more than I defined by my personal definition; well then that is not my issue. I never said they were in the porno industry. redrage brought it up.
Guess it is koolaid time again. Thoughts abound is tangents off the planet.
July 31, 2008 at 2:04 p.m.One more thing and I step away from personal response, which I always try to avoid. Only to the paper.
SailorboyG3 or E3? Can't see from here. Much to my delight I do without googling know the difference between sushimi and shushi; as well as Korean, Vietnamese (Phos of all sorts)--I have been lucky to have a very good Vietnamese chef teach me some great recipes; I love Thai. I embrace foods from many ethnicities and also know how to cook a variety of dishes from each. Tiger Cry noodles or salad is a family and guest favorite. To avoid being rude, I will leave it in English. It is a great dish and worth exploring if you like beef, spicy, and hot. Asian foods are a delight.
But then I have had dishes in other parts of the world and do not want to discount them either. Try a Hamburguesa in Equador. Eat in a Basque restaurant that is wide enough for a short line of of tables and everyone shares. Everyone goes away happy. Go up in the andes and eat a sandwich and have tea provided by a Russian guide at Incapirca. Eat pica de gallo that does not resemble anything that is served in America. Eat the most delicous civiche. Try Etheopian. Unusual, did not understand it, but I ate it.
July 31, 2008 at 1:59 p.m.Yes Sailorboy, I have been around food. So please stop the fussing with the slurs. Step above that. Remember. I only think the Advocate needs to improve on many days.
Redrage,
Am confused. Why are you into pornography? And able to easily refer to it. Sorry I don't keep up with that industry as you do apparently. All I used is the word Floozy or FLoozie. And I gave my definition. I panelled a group here and there is an agreement as to the look. The name even came from a promiscuous 14 year old girl (I think). Why be proud of that? The true Lolita look is not pure black. And I will have to say the girls in the picture are a little more conservative. The Japanese look has much shorter babydoll dresses. This look combines goth, lolita, floozy, and other things. They are missing the pony tails.
But pornography? Am not sure where you are going with that?Very very confusing. Not into that area at all.
July 31, 2008 at 1:40 p.m.Oh but ragman, you still started it off personal. We gotta swing from that. Good try and so proud of you.
July 31, 2008 at 1:26 p.m.Okay,
Names addresses, law enforcement involved. We want to give the praise you should receive for the community. This is good.
July 31, 2008 at 1:24 p.m.Key Word: LIVE, LIVES.
July 31, 2008 at 1:18 p.m.Boo-Hoo.........
I saved 3 children and a kitty this week. Also I bar-b-qued some chicken.
Ragman alas I have property in Victoria. Sailor boy, I am always pointed at the paper and the writing.
It is the the other posters that start the initial name calling, assumptions, supositions, etc. Over the last year I have watch vile, vicious fights between many posters over and over. So now you start with me because I expect more out of the Victoria Advocate. That is my right as a customer.
I do not use another language to circumvent the policy fo posting sailor boy. Stop and look back, it is individual posters that make the parts personal. Not me. Mine is with the news media itself.
I don't like to be spoon fed brainless articles. The Advocate has in the past written some excellent pieces. I have said so when they do. But they are few and far between.
If each of you take something personal from my writings to the Advocate, ask yourself what in your self should you be more active in? Are you or are you not? Why do you spend your time just calling names, fighting, saying cruel words about the posters. If you feel I am worthless to you, ignore my post, don't respond to it as you do.
Alas, you to demonstrate that you can go further down the rope and loose your cool and intelligence. How do you not know that is was not an experiment in human behavior in a controlled environment? The town has demonstrated quite well as to how people can have spit fights, call names, etc.
But to date, I have seen little rallies to improve your city. Some of you sputter and you spew, but do little else.
Congratulations, you have demonstrated once more about small town mentality, human psychology, apathy and it is better to kick someone else than improve yourself.
Congratulations to all emotional posters that spewed hate in any language. You flunked. You let someone distract you.
I still think the paper needs major improvements 75% of the time. And drinking koolaid is better than drinking booze at work.
Now why don't all of you set to saving your town. Are you fighting to keep real estate taxes low. Are active in programs. Last I saw it looked like a college student was informing citizens of legal changes in congress. Are you keeping up? Do you even know what is getting ready to change in your life because you failed to pick up a phone and call your representative or sentator?
Quit focusing on what I say to the paper and be active. I am asking for change and in my daily life I work to initiate it. Do you? If Victoria is a retirement town then there are plenty of people to help support associations for rare diseases or such. How many of you that are spewing at me, volunteer at your local hospital or nursing home? I dare you to do it for a while. Many of the people don't have family. I have been there. Surprise!!!!
So you can kick this American cur of a dog, but go look in the mirror and ask yourself what have you done for someone else today? Have you saved a life? What about the 45 babies that need care. Why don't all you get together and start a new day care center. Sailor boy, you have plenty of time. Ragman, help him.
And don't throw rocks at me about not helping. I am helping support some very rare medical research to keep some children and adults alive by supplying my blood and DNA. What you have done today? Who have you saved?
Who did you go help fix repairs at their house because they don't have money? Who have you taken food to because they are hungry?
Quit throwing rocks at me and making what the Advocate says as no personal attacks. However I think the Advocate is fair game when they do not provide professional service. You may not.
Go out and do something for charity instead of rallying against me. Your words of hate fall short because you are only demonstrating what you think you are better than.
Go do something for the City that you are crowing about. Go make it better. Help people that need it. Get off your bums. Shut the computers down for a week. It will be okay. I dare you.
Then, ask April to do a great article about how each all of you united and did something great for the town. How you were brought together. Can you do that?
July 31, 2008 at 1:07 p.m.katty, dear katty.... perhaps you need to go back and re-read the stories and the comments before you respond... the answers are out there! If you so loath our fair city and newspaper, and especially seem to have --- i don't know --- a vendetta against Aprill, do yourself a favor and don't read the paper, don't come to the forum, don't post to the forum, move to another country! Unplug your computer! There is no need to be sowing seeds of such hatred and prejudices as you have shown on other threads and in this one. So what if eons ago this fashion started out among prostitutes and call girls... that's not what it is today. These young ladies are actually covering up and looking feminine and as my dearly departed grandmother would have said: FETCHING! We here in Victoria may be behind the times... but normally when brave souls start the momentumn, we follow... we become tolerant and accepting. But most of us who consider Victoria home, love it here. We are here because we choose to stay here! We choose to read the newspaper because we like the articles... and in the recent few years, the paper has begun to expand horizons and putting more and more into it. As for there being only one electric company.... what rock do you live under? There is AEP, VEC, NEC and STEC just to name a few.... yes, we are growing and have been for quite some time!Stop being so hateful!
July 31, 2008 at 12:50 p.m.AND she doesn't even live in Victoria!
July 31, 2008 at 12:25 p.m.Virgilmaro: Thanks for the honesty then I suppose. I like honesty. ^_^
Well,it wasn;t up to us. If we had known Valli before, then we might have shot together and had it look better,ne? Oh wellz,I'm just happy the word got out! XD
Yeah,I suppose it is an artform, like Valli said that it's all about being creative, and this helps us out,and the music can also help with the creativity. ^^
Wondering: I think I know what you mean. I remember in "Cinderella",the Fairy Godmother mentioned,"Dance,be gay!" and even at such a young age even I thought that meant her being involved with the same sex,but then my Mom told me it can also mean just being happy. I guess it depends on how you use it,but either way you get those kind of reactions.
thewaywardwind: Yes,you should be dissapointed. ^^
RedRage00: Yeah, what Sailor said. Basiclly it makes you think of the "Memoirs of a Geisha" moment when she made that guy on the bike hit that stand. Though, not so hilarous here....>_<
~Kitana
July 31, 2008 at 10:40 a.m.I'm also way into anime and (lord help me) Gackt, among other things. The Japanese culture has many valuable aspects that we can learn from and adapt to our melting pot culture.
You go girls! There are lots of worse things to be into than fashion. And besides, you have a story forever about how you stopped traffic....
July 31, 2008 at 7:48 a.m.Sigh...I guess I'm getting too old. When I first saw the headline about Lolita fashions, I was expecting to see pictures of young ladies wearing skimpy bikinis. Imagine my disappointment.
July 31, 2008 at 7:30 a.m.Speaking of jerks, Wondering, just how is "gay" something bad?
I forgot to mention that it was nice to see a story I actually cared about in the newspaper. I just tend to be very critical since I care how things like these (other cultures) are presented. I feel that many of the readers may understand this as a childish means of expression, given the context of the article. It is imperative to explain that this "fad" is an artform; and not just a fashion - the music and the culture surrounding it also tie in. Also of note, as someone said earlier... this is old news.
July 31, 2008 at 5:10 a.m.Did'nt mean to insult, There's enough insult slinging happening on the internet. I'm just honest. I was just surprised that those pictures were so small. They seemed much more professional and less "myspace-esque" than the big one.
July 31, 2008 at 3:46 a.m.To Virgilmaro: Actually,we did mention Mana-sama and JRock in the interview, but apparently it wasn't made into the article. Upset me a bit. I even let her listen to some Malice Mizer. Meh.
I think we also mentioned the male style, but again,no show. =/ Even though I'm a bit insulted,I am surprised that the pictures of Valli didn't show up bigger instead of our own, because she's defiently the define of Lolita.
To Riverboat: Thanks for the welcome. ^_^
July 31, 2008 at 1:43 a.m.Yeah,well...we're not in school or anything,but yeah,it's hard walking in black right now in this weather,thankfully it was only for awhile. But,that was all I really had to wear which related to Lolita...-.-;;;
As an educator with more years than some oak trees with rings, I've seen a fair variety of costumes among the student body. Up until today, I was unaware of a Lolita trend. Thanks to the Advocate, I now know I mixed up the style with the early Madonna look prevalent when I first entered the profession in the early 80s. A lot of the speech/drama kids have a tendency to wear offbeat clothing.
It's all fine by me. I don't care - in fact I welcome - if someone shows up in an outfit redolent of the Medieval Ages. In fact, THAT style is popular with Tolkien's camp followers.
I only ask that the clothing be modest. I'd suggest not wearing black during this time of year. I get tired of writing passes for the water fountain the first few months of the year.
July 31, 2008 at 12:56 a.m.Observer: I am certain that in some if not many circles your dress, accent, or mannerisms would be considered "freaky"....These young ladies are wearing dresses of appropriate length, gloves.....actually with just a couple of minor changes they would have fit in the 50's very well.
July 30, 2008 at 11:56 p.m.Hello all, Virgil here. I've followed the anime scene for 17 years so obviously I get caught up in the new fads and fashions happening. One thing I can't get out of my mind is the fact that the article mentions nothing of impact music has had on this fashion. It mentions nothing of Visual Kei or Mana or even Jrock. Lolita and EG has much less to do with anime and much more to do with music. It also does'nt talk about the other fashions associated with Lolita, such as the male styles, There are those of us (males) who will dress up too (not like lolitas ... well, some will.) I guess what I'm trying to say is that I felt left out :( Hah. By the way, pictures of Valli should have been bigger on the newspaper, they are higher class.
July 30, 2008 at 11:55 p.m.The only positive things I can say about this fad is one- it's not hurting anybody and it's not scary like goth or thug and two- it looks better than the ghetto thug pants so many people wear. That's it, other than that it's downright freaky. Why do so called adults want to dress up like a doll? I've seen some of the girls that were interviewed dress like that and it's everything I could do to not die laughing. It reminds me of an episode of Jerry Springer I saw one time. No I don't watch that trashy show but going through the channels, I had to stop when I saw a stage full of "adults" dressed like that and yes it was related to kinky sex games. It's hard not to associate it with sex. Do your employers let you dress like that at work or is this just something fun to do when you're not at work or school cause if you do wear it to either place, it would be very hard to take you seriously. Oh well, to each his own, at least no t&a are showing and it's not offensive to anyone. Hopefully this fad wont last long.
July 30, 2008 at 11:33 p.m.The Observer,
Yeah, after hearing that comment about 5 billion times in my life,it doesn't really affect me. Kinda built up an immuinity to it. So yeah, and if I use too many commas, whoops?
Don't care. ^_^
I'm sorry you're so insecure about yourself that you have to beat someone who might be worse of than you,but you hit the wrong stone my friend. Better stop while you're ahead.

July 30, 2008 at 10:51 p.m.Some people just have dirty perverted minds and nothing better to do then pick at young women for being there own unique individuals. In No way do I find there clothing in these pictures to be provocative or "street corner" wear.
Let people be.
July 30, 2008 at 8:11 p.m.Ok. I am also a extremely proud big sister. I love my little sister Susan Jimenez!! :) I give my lil sis major props for being able to wear those lolita style clothes because I know that I would never wear them in a million years. As for all of you haters, you really shouldn't judge on what you don't know anything about. Let alone the fact that you don't know these girls. My sister is a sweet and loving girl and anybody that knows her will tell you that. Don't worry about what these other "normal" people say sis and angelica and ya'll just keep doing what ya'll do and be as silly and cute as ya'll always have been. Love Ya!!
July 30, 2008 at 7:50 p.m.I say go for it "Lolita Girls".
July 30, 2008 at 7:34 p.m.
First off why was'nt i interviewed?lol. To the person who said lolitas look like whores how can dressing cute and covering up make us look like whores? That is very close minded.I love lolita fashion and it makes me feel girly and pretty, I dont understand the people who take it in a perverted way. Like of my managers at work who saw me in lolita and said it looked "naughty". I dont understand that. All i know is that us lolita ought to stick together. Go Go Lolita-chan!
July 30, 2008 at 7:30 p.m.Nattymalik, are you a Lolita girl? By the way, I love your pic....Hit me up sometime
July 30, 2008 at 6:50 p.m.Good for them! They aren't hurting anyone or themselves, and they don't violate any decency standards. It's fun for them, and me as a people-watcher.
I've seen more skin and curves, male and female, from folks dressing "the norm" in jeans and t-shirts.
I wish there were more creative dressers living here.
July 30, 2008 at 2:17 p.m.ChattyKathy....your age is showing! Floozies....I haven't heard that since the 50's. And yes, I suppose that is an insult; it is certainly a sexist remark made by an older woman.
It is a shame but the older female generation....not all but many, were just as guilty of sexism as any man ever was. Of course they were always taught they were not as smart or as competent as the men around them....the brainwashing sticks.
July 30, 2008 at 2:10 p.m.I'm just happy that more and more people are really looking to satisfy their own want and more so expressing themselves however they choose in our society today, especially in this little town where NOTHING ever happens. It makes me smile when I see people going out on a limb; a new style genre of their choosing on their backs. I say do what you will as long as you aren't hurting anyone, It's cute! :)
July 30, 2008 at 2 p.m.Very nice, Sailor. I knew what you said. :D
July 30, 2008 at 1:28 p.m.Speaking from someone who has traveled and lived in other places in this big bad world other than little old Victoria- This look actually started in Japan in the late 80's and early 90's. I myself have followed japanamation, anime, and japanese culture since then. This look has been around ever since then and I find it so off that it is coming off like these girls are coming off as "different". They are actually very normal. Why is it that Victoria is about 30 years behind all the time. To the girls, I am glad that you are being heard and supported, on the other hand I am sad for you that you couldn't just be yourself in this town. Big stories in Victoria are always so funny. To the reporter and you guys being hateful to her, we all have bad days. The story was fine.
July 30, 2008 at 1:26 p.m.ChattyKatty,yes we are the girls that caused the wreck.
I don't know what floozies mean,but I suppose I should be insulted. O.o
dreamwake: "I can see that some have awoken from there blissful slumber up and eager to start the day with their daily cup of jave o'hate."
July 30, 2008 at 1:21 p.m.Haha! Love that comment! I think it's just one of those "hate if you don't understand" type deals. People who don't understand this as a fashion, and understand it only wrongly as a fetish look down upon it,and decide to hate it,more than embrace.
To quote a previous comment.."It's still early...the haters will be here soon." I can see that some have awoken from there blissful slumber up and eager to start the day with their daily cup of jave o'hate.
July 30, 2008 at 1:08 p.m.I love it....it is a style of the time. During my time the girls wore tie-dye and long flowing fairy like dresses, barefoot, lots of hair ribbons....the hippy love-child look. These young ladies are attractive and feminine and that is wonderful.
I am with the lady who complained about the boys with their pants hanging around their knees....If they only realized how absolutely idiotic they looked, surely they would not dress like that. I was recently in the mall and saw a very attractive young man dressed like a clown...tennis shoes three sizes too big, silver and untied, pants to his ankles with 8 inches of his boxers showing, cap cocked to the side, and with a gangsta swagger..he was strutting down the mall like he owned the place and I noticed some of the groups of girls pointing and giggling and I don't think it was in admiration....
July 30, 2008 at 12:20 p.m.Angelica my sister ...I am a proud sister ..proud of her for believing in herself and taking a chance to show the world that there is more to life than living and conforming to the"norm".You have given inspiration ...inspiration to help a person look within themselves and be themselves and never fear that you are not going to be accepted because of the clothing you choose..but loved and cared for because of who the person really is inside.Congratulations on the interview and may you never ..ever..stop being you!
July 30, 2008 at 12:13 p.m.Actually, the last line of the main story is Its all about being unique, new ideas and new fashion, and taking those things and making it your own.
July 30, 2008 at 11:21 a.m.The following sentences were a sidebar of quick facts about Lolita Fashion I put together for the print version. For some reason, the Web site combined them into one story.
Sorry for the confusion.
Personally, I find them ADORABLE! I don't care for all of the black. I believe in Japan it is more frills, lace, eyelet, white or pastel colors; but adorable just the same. You girls ROCK! Being a Lolita Girl may not make you unique, but being you does and I applaud you!
July 30, 2008 at 11:16 a.m.so i see a certain someone thinks that them dressing like this is "crazy". but when you think about it, you have alot of girls today who have low self esteem and are very self concious because of people like you. i think its a great thing that they got into this kind of fashion because you know what? it may make them feel GOOD about themselves, and shouldnt you find that to be a positive thing? im sure if you saw a runway model in the same exact outfit, you would think of them as totally "bangable", but when you see these young ladies in these outfits, you think they are crazy? personally i also find these young ladies to be very cultured and their ideas to be quite ingenious. victoria needs a change! not all of us are conservative bible beaters who think that any change whatsoever makes us "freaks." i think that experimenting with fashion from different parts of the world is wonderful, and they are better for bringing something new to the table!
July 30, 2008 at 10 a.m.I'd rather see 101 Lolita girls than even 1 more kid with their pants hanging down below their butts and boxers showing! I see nothing wrong with the look. Not everyone can pull it off though.
BTW.... I LOVED the way Jackie Kennedy dressed!
July 30, 2008 at 9:10 a.m.I'd agree with Wondering about the "world needing a change" but not in fashion!
July 30, 2008 at 8:58 a.m.In this day and age we have a Cornucopia of fashion, and the Lolita is just one of them. Need examples, go hang out at the mall and just watch all the people. You'll see Lolita, grunge, trash (I guess that's what it's called when the pants are down below the butt showing the boxers), etc... And yes if people want to dress depressed that's their style they chose for that attention, just like these girls.
If any age needed a fashoin change it was when all women wanted to be and dress like Jacqueline Kennedy, or Mary Tyler Moore, or Marilyn Monroe.
But in all fashions you have to pick something that suits you. This Lolita fashion works for some but not for others.
What a cute look, I love it! I myself am not daring enough to dress like that, but I think they look great!
July 30, 2008 at 8:21 a.m.Great article and pics !
July 30, 2008 at 2:47 a.m.It's very late and I need to go to sleep for work tomorrow, but I am just very happy this article is out in our newspaper! If anyone has any questions or would like more information, just send me a msg on here ^-^ It would be great to meet even more people interested in the fashion!
July 30, 2008 at 12:28 a.m.Thanks!
Arigatou Natty-chan! ^_^
Looks like the story is finally up. Hmm,April-san,you seemed to repeat yourself. Silly, silly girl. But we still love you! We want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being intrested in our hobby!
Hmm,I want to meet this other girl...Meeeeeh! >_<
Oh,and please,if you don't mind, since you left it out, here is the MySpace for the Lolita Girls! http://www.myspace.com/lovleylolitasl...
And as Natty-chan said, please don't take our hobby negativly. It's exactly like Aprill-san said, the only reason people view it negativly is because of the book made by Vladmir Nabokov, this is far from it. That it simple pedophilla, whereas this,is just a fashion and a lifestyle. None of the two are connected.
July 29, 2008 at 11:47 p.m.Being a close friend to Angelica and Susan, I'm so glad that someone was able to let them have their chance to shine.
To everyone who bothers to read the comments, I hope you won't react negatively. They really mean no harm. All they want out of this is for you to understand their hobbies better.
Also I was very surprised that their was another woman who was into Lolita fashion! She's very beautiful. :)
July 29, 2008 at 11:31 p.m.I waited all week to read this article! Thank you for posting it!
