Who says books are dead?

In honor of the midnight release tonight of Stephenie Meyer’s “Breaking Dawn,” Hastings in Victoria is throwing a Vampire Prom.

The store will be transformed with decorations, red and black lighting, music and a dance floor, said Hastings book associate Jonathan McDonald.

“We’re encouraging people to dress up in prom attire and the vampire part is optional but encouraged,” McDonald said. “We’re hoping to have lot of people come because it’s going to be a big, fun thing. We even have associates coming in on their day off because they want to attend.”

“Breaking Dawn” is the fourth and final installment in Meyer’s Twilight series. The series has been an international best-seller and there are 5.5 million copies of the Twilight Saga in-print worldwide, according to a press release from the books’ publisher.

The series follows a teenage girl who falls in love with a vampire.

The series sells very well at the Victoria Hastings store, with over 70 copies of “Breaking Dawn” already reserved, McDonald said.

“Last week, somebody asked me for copy of one of her books, and even though I knew we just got a shipment in of the book, there was only one left on the shelf,” he added. “They sell very quickly.”

According to a news release, it has been a busy year for Meyer. Although the Twilight series is geared more toward young adults, Meyer also published her debut novel for adults, “The Host” in May.

In December, the first book in the Twilight series will be released as a major motion picture.

Hastings’ Vampire Prom lasts from 9 p.m. to midnight tonight. For more information, call 361-573-3721.
