H-E-B has pulled raw serrano peppers from its shelves in response to a United States Food and Drug Administration warning that some Mexico-grown serranos might be linked to recent Salmonella outbreaks, the company announced Thursday.

“We are closely monitoring the situation and view this as a necessary step to ensure the safety of our customers,” Winell Herron, H-E-B Group’s vice president of public affairs and diversity said in a news release. “We will return the product to our stores once it is determined safe to consume.”

The voluntary recall is a precautionary measure, Herron said in the release, and no customers have reported illnesses.

Victoria’s Wal-Mart is following suit, assistant manager David De Los Santos said.

The Wal-Mart chain has not stocked the peppers for about a week, he said, and stores won’t until they receive further notice from the home office.

Dick’s Food Store on Crestwood also pulled both serrano and jalapeño peppers from its shelves about a week ago, manager Colin Keag said.

Like Wal-Mart, the shop has no immediate plans to put them back up for sale, he said.

Customers don’t seem to have many questions concerning the recall, Keag said, although some will call to see if the store has the peppers on-hand.

You won’t find serranos inside Save-a-Lot on Laurent Street either. Store personnel pulled them from the shelves Thursday.
