GONZALES - Who said chivalry is dead?

At the Texas Youth Rodeo State Finals it is alive and rearing its head in the senior ribbon roping contest. In the event, Clint Nyegaard is looking to help his partner Kelsey Johse not only win first place, but also win her first saddle.

“I would be really honored to help her win her first saddle,” said Nyegaard who will be a senior at Cuero this year. “It would be really special for her and for me to win it. She’s one of my best friends just like everyone out here who rodeos.”

The Texas Youth Rodeo Finals started Tuesday and finishes on Saturday at J.B. Wells Park. The 1st Go Round finished Wednesday and the 2nd Go Round begins today and comes to its completion on Friday. The Short Go is on Saturday for the championships.

Ribbon roping is an event where the boy ropes the calf and the girl runs and pulls a tag off. The fastest to perform the feat wins the round.

“It would be really exciting to win,” said Johse who has been competing in the Texas Youth Rodeo Finals since she was 8. “We work really well together. We are friends and talk a lot.”

Johse, 15, is going to be a sophomore at Boling and is also competing in the senior girls breakaway.

Nyegaard is also competing in team roping with Cody Price.

“There is really good competition here,” Nyegaard said. “It’s not the toughest, but it’s a good rodeo. I just have to make sure my horse is fed and ready to go and we’ll do good.”
