Editor, the Advocate:
When I was younger, my parents would tell me “You are who you hang with.” Over the years, this line has taken on more meaning, and I believe it is correct. In the spirit of this parental advice, I have an open question for all citizens who vote Democrat: Do you know with whom you are hanging? The Democrats have been very effective in shaping their image and have been less than honest in their endeavor.
Many who vote Democrat think that theirs is the party of minority rights and civil liberties, among other concepts. However, the voting record of past and current Democrats in Congress tells a different story.
The most sweeping civil rights legislation in history, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, was passed by a higher percentage of Republicans than Democrats. Between 1933 and 1964, there were 26 Congressional votes on civil rights measures. In these votes, a majority of Democrats opposed the measures more than 80 percent of the time, while a majority of Republicans supported the measures 96 percent of the time. http://www.congresslink.org/print_basics_histmats_civilrights64text.htm
The Democrats have proclaimed themselves as champions of civil liberties, but a review of recent events disproves this status. In the recent Heller case before the Supreme Court, neither of the two Democrat-appointed justices agreed that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right, or a civil liberty. The states and cities with the highest percentage of Democrats also tend to enact the strictest gun legislation. HR 1399 is a bill that reinforces the Heller decision, and only 65 Democrats have cosponsored the bill (28 percent), while more than 90 percent of Republicans have cosponsored the bill. For the group that recognizes the authority of SCOTUS in Roe v. Wade, the Democrats sure seem to be selective in which decisions they think have merit.
Democrats also have recently become confused about the First Amendment. While they totally support the right of a person to burn a U.S. flag, they conversely don’t support the speech freedoms of radio broadcasters. HR 2905 is a measure that would end the constraints of the Fairness Doctrine. Currently, the bill has 207 cosponsors; only two are Democrats. The Fairness Doctrine would interject a liberal viewpoint into an industry that has been deemed conservative by the market. These measures would not be extended to print mediums though, which tend to be liberal. The liberals don’t seem to favor competition. Educate yourself before you vote!

5th generation Texan. Since 1850. Not that it matters. Johnson turned the South over to the Republicans because of his support for the poor and Civil Rights. To say he did it only for votes is very cynical. Not like you...LOL
August 1, 2008 at 4:51 p.m.Of course, I know about the voting scandal etal.... They all did it back then. Including Coke Stevenson. Doesn't make it right. But that has nothing to do with the Great Society.
A note on his opponent at the time Coke Stevenson----Stevenson was a traditional Democratic Texas politician. (who became a Republcian) Although he was very popular, he was a racist. In 1943, for example, when Stevenson was governor, a black man was lynched in Texarkana, Texas. When asked about the lynching, Stevenson said, "Well, you know these Negroes sometimes do those kinds of things that provoke whites to such action.
I'll stand all the way with LBJ. (except for expanding the war)
Tough to bear fruit with only DNC tlaking points as fertilizer.
August 1, 2008 at 1:49 p.m.And obviously, you're an authority on war, so have at it.
August 1, 2008 at 1:14 p.m.Apparently there's an echo in this thread now.
August 1, 2008 at 12:50 p.m.A former House GOP leader is calling this year's political atmosphere "the worst since Watergate and is far more toxic than the fall of 2006," citing "deep seeded (sic) antipathy toward the president."
Rep. Tom Davis wrote a 20-page treatise (see earlier note) assessing the state of the Republican Party as we head into the summer and presented it to House GOP rank and file this morning. Davis, who is retiring, is rumored to be interested in finishing his term as the head of the GOP House campaign arm.
We are hearing a lot today from Republicans and their concern about their "brand," and Davis takes it to another level in his memo; "a congressional GOP brand tied to George Bush is struggling"; "...deep seeded antipathy toward the president, the war, gas prices, the economy, foreclosures and, in some areas, the underlying cultural differences that continue to brand our party."
And the kicker, "the Republican brand is in the trash can...if we were dog food, they would take us off the shelf."
http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archiv...
Mr. Gingrich said Republicans had fallen behind Democrats in public approval on every major issue. He warned them that Senator John McCain of Arizona, the partys presumptive presidential nominee, might not be their salvation and that the partys own damaged brand could drag down his candidacy.

"The conservatives refuse to accept that the left is cleaning their clock, and until you hit some bottom, wherever that is, to where it says, 'Well, maybe we ought to do something different,' little or nothing's going to change," Mr. DeLay told editors and reporters at The Washington Times last week.

August 1, 2008 at 11:59 a.m.Who got us into WW2, Korea, Vietnam, Kosovo, and Somalia?
August 1, 2008 at 11:38 a.m.Just because you use the word vet in your name doesn't mean you are the only authority on war. You can go ahead and flush the rest of your DNC talking points now.
Yeah, I saw that last night. Funny how these guys are so ready to use someone else's kids to fight wars. That is totally disgusting.
August 1, 2008 at 11:33 a.m.Is there an echo in this thread?
August 1, 2008 at 11:30 a.m.Lol...Vet,did you hear about what Seymour Hersh (New Yorker) is saying about brainstorming session they had(is that a metaphor?)where Cheney suggested that we get an American company to build a PT boat ,and put Iranian decals on it,then they would dress up some Navy SEALs as Iranians and shoot at them to provoke a war with Iran. Thank God they rejected it(I think)...Chaney must of had his Darth Vader helmet on that day...LOL......See the vid clip

See the reason Admiral Fallon quit.

RAGMAN:My God Man....you are a Texan right? I was raised in Duval County and I know how LBJ got elected....Box 13...voting the dead and the illegal. LBJ was the biggest crook that ever breathed and you bet your booty his motives were self-serving on anything he supported. That dog most certainly hunts. In fact there are many who believe that JFK was in LBJ's way and that might just be why he never finished that nice visit to Dallas. Actually my own opinion leans more to a liason between LBJ and Brown and Root and the big companies that were getting ready to loose their nether regions if Kennedy pulled us out of Viet Nam.
August 1, 2008 at 11:16 a.m.Come on Mike....give up that poll business. The Democratic Congress's numbers make Bush's approval rating look phenomenal.
But even at that, anyone with an ounce of common sense knows that you can word poll questions and juggle poll results to say whatever you want them to say.
It's kinda like the poll numbers on how many more people are flocking to the Democratic party because of the primary numbers. Duh....how many Republicans voted in the Democratic Primary this year.....I did.....that's one....and I can count at least 30-40 of my friends right here in Victoria City.....plus so many more that I don't know. But Mike is just as happy as horse dung because all of us who voted in the Democratic party are new and faithful Democrats.....NOT!!!
August 1, 2008 at 11:10 a.m.As one of my favorite Americans, Richard Cheney would say: "So?"
August 1, 2008 at 11:03 a.m.Poll results just in:
August 1, 2008 at 10:28 a.m.Of 21,546 rats polled in a recent survey, 98.667% say that rat poison, cleanliness, proper ventilation, and sunlight are bad for the environment.
Now if you were happy when the GOP had control of the House,Senate, and president then vote Republican....According to a WSJ/NBC poll 74% Americans do not like the direction this country is going in....It would be cruel and inhumane to post the results of the polls on which party Americans trust most on the economy, education, health care, fixing social security,(yes) income taxes, energy policy, and the enviroment...Don't make me post them...LOL
August 1, 2008 at 10:19 a.m.According to the polls, Democrats will gain 30 seats in the House and at least six seats in the Senate. The indictment of Ted Stevens(R-AK) might make it seven.... So it might not matter who the president is,because #1 Nancy Pelosi has the bring the bill up before the house, pass it ,where they just might have a bulletproof veto in the senate.
Wal-Mart was shamed into redoing their payroll policies to allow more of their employees to be insured, and it's female executives to get equal treatment.
Just giving another point of view.
August 1, 2008 at 10:11 a.m.American History is something that everyone needs to go back and educate themselves on. You don't know where you are going until you know where you have been. Both political parties have become frightening. The people who fought to free this country and mold this country were afraid of to much government control. Now, go back and read world history and find out what happens to countries whose government has too much control. Wake up, people. Nothing is free. DO NOT VOTE DEMOCRAT! Republicans at this point are the lesser of the evils.
August 1, 2008 at 10:02 a.m.So you really think that LBJ didn't care about the poor and he was just trying to get votes?
July 31, 2008 at 11:41 p.m.That dog won't hunt.
My point. We agree. I think....LOL
July 31, 2008 at 11:39 p.m.Lost my glasses. What?
As I said before....The Democratic party during Civil War times was so far from the Democatic party of today that you cannot even remotely compare.
And they do indeed promote programs to dumb down the poor and keep them dependent on the government in order to get their votes. Even a blind man can see that.
July 31, 2008 at 11:37 p.m."now they are the party that exploits the poor for their own gain. "
July 31, 2008 at 11:34 p.m.You know that isn't true. That sounds like a Fox talking point they got from the RNC.
It still is the party of the working man. How many LABOR unions support Republicans (outside of the crooks at the teamsters). There is no labor movement in Victoria, so I can see how that may be a problem. But as for the country as a whole.....
Andrew Johnson comment was pointed at the original letter writer. His comments are as legit as that one. Plus Lincoln was dead when the slaves were freed;so it weren't him. And Johnson was a Democrat.
SOOO....he was using faulty logic. That's all. Those Dixiecrats are todays republicans.
Ragman....because Andrew Johnson freed the slaves?; what does that have to do with anything?....a Democrat during that time and a Democrat in 2008 are two totally separate creatures. Besides that Andrew Johnson vetoed the first Civil Rights Bill.....he was NOT the black man's friend. He was also impeached.
July 31, 2008 at 9:52 p.m.There was a time when Democrats were the party of the working man.....now they are the party that exploits the poor for their own gain, and work hard to keep the poor dependent on the government.
Plagarism? Get a grip!!! Mike, your link is not the original source....God only knows who the original source is. Which doesn't make it any less "right on". I would give credit if I had any idea who wrote it originally. This has been around the e-mail circuit several times...enough times to be public domain.
July 31, 2008 at 9:46 p.m.For someone who probably cuts and pastes letters to his mother you sure have a problem with it. I'm telling you, it's those little green men that sucked you up in that saucer.
southtexas gets my vote for best use of other sources and reference materials.
July 31, 2008 at 7:23 p.m.I'm voting Democrat because; I can't stand the right-wing exagerated scare tactics. I am voting Democrat because Andrew Johnson freed the slaves. Now discuss.
July 31, 2008 at 6:48 p.m.Want to talk real history. Let's go hoss.
Plagiarism, you should at least give credit to the cut& paste
Why I'm Voting Democrat

Southtexas: I haven't agreed with a lot...most...well actually nearly all of your prior posts, but I love this one and couldn't agree with you more.
July 31, 2008 at 6:02 p.m.WHY I'M VOTING DEMOCRAT!!!I'm voting Democrat because I believe the government will do a betterjob of spending the money I earn than I would.
I'm voting Democrat because freedom of speech is fine as long as nobody is offended by it.
I'm voting Democrat because when we pull out of Iraq I trust that the bad guys will stop what they're doing because they now think we're good people.
I'm voting Democrat because I believe that people who can't tell us if it will rain on Friday CAN tell us that the polar ice caps will melt away in ten years if I don't start driving a Prius.
I'm voting Democrat because I'm not concerned about the slaughter of millions of babies so long as we keep all death row inmates alive.
I'm voting Democrat because I believe that business should not be allowed to make profits for themselves. They need to break even and give the rest away to the government for redistribution as THEY see fit...we have to have money to support the illegal aliens.
I'm voting Democrat because I believe three or four pointy headed elitist liberals need to rewrite the Constitution every few days to suit some fringe kooks who would NEVER get their agendas past the voters.
I'm voting Democrat because I believe that when the terrorists don't have to hide from us over there, when they come over here I don't want to have any guns in the house to fight them off with.
I'm voting Democrat because I love the fact that I can now marry whatever I want. I've decided to marry my horse.
I'm voting Democrat because I believe oil companies' profits of 4% on a gallon of gas are obscene but the government taxing the same gallon of gas at 15% isn't.
Makes ya wonder how anyone with even half a brain could EVER vote Democrat , now doesn't it?
July 31, 2008 at 5:56 p.m.But then of course Mike claims that any bad legislation credited to Democrats wasn't real because those Democrats later all became Republicans, thus they were closet Republicans when the bad things were done....Yeah.....that's the ticket!
Mike were you one of the lucky few who were sucked up into an alien space ship with tubes placed in unmentionable places?
Mr. Ocker I will gladly take up your cut-and-paste challenge, tomorrow when I have more time.
July 31, 2008 at 5:37 p.m.After the 1964 civil rights legislation was passed, Southern Democrats became Republicans.
Matthew covered all the wedge issues like abortion, flag-burning, gun control etc. to try to make his point.
I have done my homework Mr. Ocker, this election will not be about the wedge issues, perhaps that's why the Democrats have a 15 point lead in all congressional races.... It's about the economy and the voters do not want to hear about a reduction in corporate rates, and maintaining the Bush tax cuts as the only solutions to our faltering economy.
BTW The Democratic Party has it's faults like the GOP ,but it stands tall and not ashamed to standby the many pieces of legislation passed on civil rights, civil liberties,or social security...Look at the GOP vote on minimum wage and today's Paycheck Fairness Act(equal pay for women) which Bush threatens to veto, and the new G.I. bill McCain did not on,etc.....Fairness Doctrine v Paycheck Fairness I am glad my party is not that interested in Rush, as it is about equal pay for women....Got to go ,I am getting hungry.
