Starving horses get a helping hand

Neglected animals in need of both food and water

YORKTOWN – Three miles from the center of town, a pasture is home to a sad group of at least four very skinny horses. Their ribs and hip bones stick out from beneath their sagging skin. Their empty water troughs are yet another sign of neglect.

“If you see them, I guarantee it’ll make you cry,” said Robert Roller.

Concerned residents looked for support from animal protection agencies and local law enforcement to help the five neglected horses, but to no avail, said Roller.

Roller was out looking for hay for his livestock recently when he stumbled upon the pasture on 11th Street with the emaciated horses.

“I saw how skinny these horses were…. I looked at the trough and both were bone dry. There hadn’t been any water for a long time and the bottom started cracking.”

Roller, who has been caring for the animals, says as far as he can tell, no one has been out to care for the animals since he’s taken it upon himself to do so.

“This little colt is in such bad shape he can’t even stand up. They’re so malnourished, I mean wild horses eat better than these. The horses can’t get water or feed,” Roller said.

“These animals, they can’t fend for themselves. They’re out in the middle of a field where there’s not a damn bit of grass. I’m feeding my animals three or four times a day cause I have to,” Roller said.

A horse, he says, will easily drink 5 to 6 gallons of water a day. “There’s no reason for these animals to be out here like this. If you’re not going to take care of them, at least put them in some place where they have some shade,” he said.

With temperatures soaring into the hundreds, it is important to maintain water and food for animals.

  • I'm sure no one is- Our area is very bad about doing nothing on animal cruelty- we do not have an agency like the SPCA- My husband says animal neglect falls under the health department's jurisdiction. I own horses myself and anyone who can starve a horse to death is sick. I'm willing to help if the Advocate will let me know who to contact.

  • I can NOT believe law enforcement in this area refuse to get involved. This is VERY clear animal abuse. Criminal charges should most definently be filed.
