Editor, the Advocate:
Biking. With gas prices rising, why is the city of Victoria not planning ahead of time? There are some of us who would like to ride our bikes to work or to other places of interest. There is no way of riding across Navarro, the loop and other major streets. There are no bike trails. In a lot of places there are no sidewalks, and if there are, there may be a a big pole stuck in the middle of it. It is not safe to ride here in Victoria. I think Victoria should think about starting to make it safe to ride and to walk.

Another danger you might not have thought of Karie2.
May 7, 2008 at 10:28 a.m.When my wife takes the Prius, I use my bike for short trips, but I am not that good negotiating trash cans, barking dogs etc LOL
You bet! I try to ride my bike for short trips to avoid driving, but I am too afraid to deal with certain streets because the traffic is so unfriendly towards pedestrians and cyclists.
May 6, 2008 at 10:53 p.m.In the last 13 years I've lived in Victoria, I've found the city to be pedestrian unfriendly. I have children walking to school across busy roads (Rio Grande) without cross walks and pedestrian signals/lights.
The majority of drivers in Victoria are not sensitive to pedestrian safety, and I find it difficult to enjoy bicycling or walking with any confidence, and worry about becoming a statistic.
We definitely need bike and hike trails to accomidate residents who choose this form of exercise. For folks that would like to limit their fuel (petroleum) consumption, this would be a viable alternative.
