Editor, the Advocate:

Re: the ultimate close knit workplace (Saturday, May 10).

It really frightens me to think that a person indicted for felony theft is allowed to take care of the elderly residents at a nursing facility. Are the families of the residents aware of this matter? Does the facility even know? We are constantly hearing of elderly abuse in the media. Unfortunately, there are many forms of abuse. Putting trust in someone and having that trust violated can be devastating. I believe the administration of any nursing home should have the obligation of doing a background check on all of their employees. I have personally experienced the devastation the person in this article has brought to many. I would hate to put someone else I loved in the same position.

  • The facility is required to do a background check. Being that she has not been convicted they had no reason to not hire her. A felony conviction would make her ineligible for employment however.
