HALLETTSVILLE — About 10 suspected illegal immigrants ran from officers after an attempted traffic stop Friday morning.
Deputy Mike Gibson attempted to stop a 1996 four-door Ford pickup for speeding near the intersection of U.S. Highway 77-Alternate and U.S. Highway 90-Alternate at 9:15 a.m., but the pickup ran through a fence and into a pasture, Lavaca County Sheriff Micah Harmon said.
The pickup stopped and about 10 people jumped out, ran through the pasture and absconded down a creek, Harmon said.
Harmon, three other deputies, Precinct 1 Constable Alton Brown and Precinct 2 Constable Joe Nieto responded to assist, but weren’t able to capture the suspected illegal immigrants, all of whom appeared to be men, the sheriff said.
“We’re continuing the search. We notified all the landowners in the area and made everyone aware,” Harmon said.
Harmon asks residents who spot the men or see suspicious activity to call the Lavaca County Sheriff’s Office.
“We would like to remind people not to leave their vehicles unlocked with keys in the vehicles,” Harmon said. “Keep their doors and windows locked.”

Of coarse they are here illegally..and of coarse they run they are afraid, hungry and cold ..OMG..but you know what they are also HUMAN BEINGS, I guess Christ would never have had a chance here we'd call the FBI because he looked alot like an Illegal Immigrant...
May 20, 2008 at 8:37 a.m.Well, My daughter came home from school upset because people of our neighboring country called Mexico got off the train they were 3 young boys and a young girl in long beautiful black braids kinda like around 17 maybe ,.My daughter was attending a prominent high school in the jackson county area. She said she saw them be run down and grabbed and pushed and held down by the police placing their hand hard against their heads in a ditch like dogs she said. She came home very upset to actually see what they do to the people that come to try to make a home in our great land of Opportunity..
A helicopter and several police cars were called to the scene .She claimed like a movie ..She said there was dogs also. She said they would let the dog snarl at them like if they were going to attack them. Well, I guess that is the best greeting in Texas we have. When all they want is to have a chance at a new life.. but its ok for them to go to Iraq and die for a country that isnt even theirs because that was his dream.
Gee, this place has such harmony and love.
I'd hate to see if we hated one another.
They ran because they paid good money to be here, and they want to work. Yes, they should be rounded up because they entered the country illegally, but I don't think they're any more dangerous than your average shaved-head cretin spouting rap lyrics.
May 18, 2008 at 1:46 a.m.OK, this happened less than two miles from my home. Now we have ten more criminals wondering around our county. And how do we know these are illegal aliens? How do we know they are not terrorists? And don't tell me they aren't criminals - why did they run? This crap has got to stop for the safety of us all.
