Editor, the Advocate:
How school helped me and made me succeed:
With my senior year winding down, I would like to take the time to relive the past four years of school and how everyone has helped me succeed throughout. Since eighth grade, teachers, paraprofessionals, friends, and especially my mom have been there for me.
To sum this up, I am grateful for their help and all the old and new friends I've been in contact with. With the acquisition of a laptop, which I have to this day, it has helped me with written work. Special education and regular education teachers have all learned to modify my work, and accommodations have been provided in accordance to my ARD. This has helped me succeed and understand what's expected. I have reached a plateau that I have long wanted, the A Honor Roll. This year, with all straight A's in all of my seven classes, I am still going strong.
When I graduate from school, my dream is to head for college and attempt to succeed there. It is very important that teachers are open-minded about teaching students with disabilities. It is also very important that they educate themselves on the disability that a student may have. Parents need to get over their emotions and not be in denial and concentrate in helping their child. When I was first diagnosed, there was no information on autism for my mom to help me, but she has worked very hard to learn about this challenging disability. The school system needs to catch up on how to prepare a student for post education. In closing, this has been the greatest four years I've gone through, despite having autism.

I have a gay relative, and I was wondering why gay marriage is against the law. I think people should be able to make their own decisions on how they would like to spend their lives. I know it's called “holy matrimony,” but it's still love, and people should respect that. Why it can be considered a crime is beyond me.

I think that abortion should not be allowed no matter what the situation is. No child should be denied life. There are other options if you can’t take care of your child. But abortion should not be one of those options. If there is a fetus inside of any woman, then there is a reason that child should be brought into this world. It’s not the child’s fault you made that wrong choice. You now have to own up to your mistakes and be the woman you were when you decided to become an adult. When you do something you’re not suppose to, there will always be consequences to follow.

I am the public affairs chief, and I am going to tell you about our program. Our program us about building better citizens for America. We are involved in parades, building houses for Habitat for Humanity, volunteering at Smith Elementary every Wednesday, and recently we were on the news, but I have one complaint. We are not an Army ROTC. We are an Air Force ROTC. We are also involved with the H-E-B Feast of Sharing, where we hand out food and all the trimmings. We are really trying to get the newspaper more involved in what we do so the community can know more about us. If you are in the program, you are not obligated to join the military, but you can, and if you do it gives you a couple of stripes.

I believe that the gas prices are too high. It is costing more money out of our pockets just to go anywhere. If it continues to increase, how much will it be next year, $5 a gallon? We need to do something about it. If it goes up any more there will be hardly anyone left on the road.

I am currently a senior at Memorial High. I know that at this point in the game there is nothing I can really do about it; but in my opinion the cost of building two new high schools cannot be justified. Here's an idea: Why don't we build one new high school and, I don't know, use the two we already have. I love the idea of a sports complex, but why can't we have that and still use the campus it happens to sit on for a school? I won't be in high school after this year, or even in this town, but it still burns me up when I have to watch tax dollars swirl down the toilet. I am still 17, so I can't vote yet. When I do get to vote, I will vote to spend money wisely. I hope at least one person that reads this does the same.

I would like to see more things in the paper about the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps.
I have been involved in the AFJROTC program at Memorial High School for four years now, and this year is the first year that I have seen anything about AFJROTC in the paper.
I feel that if there was more exposure on us, then more people would join.
We have done many things in the community, but it was never talked about, or when we are talked about, they get our names wrong or something else wrong. I hope that next year things are different and we finally get the exposure that we deserve.
