Jose Mauricio Torres, 15, was his family’s youngest child. He loved to sing, dance and listen to the radio.
Torres was a bit of a homebody.
In May 2003, however, the teenager left his grandmother in El Salvador to join his mother, sister and brother in Houston.
Torres braved the trip to Mexico and then risked the journey to the United States.
Like his family before him, Torres entered this country illegally.
But the trip for Torres ended May 14, 2003, in south Victoria County. He was one of 19 to die inside a sealed tractor-trailer.
The dead were remembered Saturday during a special ceremony. This year marks the fifth anniversary of the worst human smuggling tragedy in U.S. history.
“We were three, but now we’re only two,” said the boy’s sister, Anna Torres Rios, 27. “He was the best of brothers.”
Rios, who lives in Houston, has one remaining sibling, a 21-year-old brother. She misses her baby brother, though.
“We were always together studying, going to the soccer field. It was a lot of fun,” she said.
The brother and sister lived with their grandmother in San Alejo, La Union, El Salvador. Their mother was in Houston illegally.
When their El Salvadoran father died, Rios risked the illegal trip to see her mother. Torres followed not long after.
Dora Torres, 45, is the boy’s soft-spoken mother.
“He was a good person. He ate everything,” the mother said, smiling. “I always remember him. I feel that he’s still alive. I don’t think of him as dead.”
She said her son dreamed of living permanently with her in Houston.
“He hiked, swam, did everything a normal 15-year-old would do,” she said. “As long as I’m alive, I’ll be coming here.”
More than 60 people attended the ceremony on Fleming Prairie Road near U.S. Highway 77. Nineteen signs were planted, each with a name of one of the dead.
The immigrants died during a trip from Harlingen to Victoria. At least 73 were crammed inside the tractor-trailer. They suffocated, baked in the heat and dehydrated.
The boy’s grandmother, Maria Angela Torres, visited the makeshift memorial for the first time on Saturday.
She wore a green dress, sandals and gold-colored jewelry. Her black hair was pulled tight against her scalp.
A black umbrella – one of more than 10 in the crowd painted with the words “No more dead” – hid her tears.
“He was a very good boy,” she said. “He was a brave boy.”
Nearby, three men propped a 400-pound solid concrete cross, a symbol of the deaths then and today, on its side.
Juan Martinez, a 42-year-old Victoria man who knows the boy’s mother, built the cross. Martinez illegally entered the U.S. through Laredo when he was 13, he said.
The cross bears Torres’ name.
Victoria County Sheriff T. Michael O’Connor partially blocked traffic with the same SUV he drove the morning of the tragedy.
He drove the SUV five years ago into nearby fields to find injured survivors and to help get them to care.
The Rev. Stan DeBoe, of Our Lady of Sorrows, spoke to the crowd for about 10 minutes.
“The measure of a people’s moral and spiritual health is the way that they care for those who are hungry, thirsty, strangers, imprisoned, ill, marginalized and in any type of need,” he said.
He said the memorial is holy ground and he anointed each of the 19 signs.
The ceremony turned political rally at times – a call to action.
Speakers lobbied for national immigration reform. They called Hispanics to voice their troubles through their votes.
Rios, Torres’ sister, stared at her brother’s sign. She has a full-time job in Houston and said she dedicates her life to her 2-year-old daughter.
On Saturday, her thoughts were elsewhere.
“We will never forget him. We’ll always come to this place,” she said, looking to her brother’s sign.
She placed her hand on her face and cried. “He came here for a better future.”

That's his M.O.. Always, over and over and over........
May 19, 2008 at 11:06 p.m.He is old though, so be nice. Respect your elders, but darn it's hard!!
Mark, we get your point....you are now arguing with yourself. Quit beating the dead horse, the horse is begging you.
May 19, 2008 at 10:39 p.m.There are a few in this forum who are beginning to take themselves WAY to seriously! You people need to lighten up.
May 19, 2008 at 10:34 p.m.Mark,,,,,keep up....it was in reference to your queen vs king statement. You insinuating ReyRey was a QueenQueen (change out 1 letter but its all the same, we got it..maybe you didn't) The 200 I was referring to was the # of people reported showing up at the beach event Saturday.
May 19, 2008 at 10:32 p.m.Now you are going to prove Reys point. Geezz....what a maroon!
May 19, 2008 at 10:30 p.m.We polled 200 people and you insulted all of them. That's how we found out.
May 19, 2008 at 10:21 p.m.I'm Chester Splivitz and I approve this message.
How bout them Spurs?!?
May 19, 2008 at 10:09 p.m.LOL Bighorn
May 19, 2008 at 9:49 p.m.Mark, in response to your question....about 200 give or take.
May 19, 2008 at 9:49 p.m.Yankees....enough to make a fella wanna puck, punt and puke.....
May 19, 2008 at 9:48 p.m.Go Spurs!!!! Yankees suck & wear each others used thongs (it was on the news)...I know nothing about the Giants.
May 19, 2008 at 9:40 p.m.Ok, I said I give up. Mark and bighorn, you won. You can go and drink your Schlitz together. Just like there are haters, there are people that are decent. I was wrong by using the sentence "it seems like there is nothing but haters in this town", maybe I should had used a better sentence but seems is a words that does not connotate a whole or full but rather an allusion to something but somehow some people do not understand this concept. YOU WON. Can we move on to another topic, How about them Giants, huh?? And I told you already, report me for being a bigot. Simple solution. God bless
May 19, 2008 at 8:58 p.m.So Rey, your declaration "Victoria is full of nothing but (racists)" was not insulting, inflaming, and was justified? And you insult others as being "Bible toting haters" and expect others to agree? Sorry, but you have called the kettle black.I
May 19, 2008 at 8:40 p.m. DO hate hypocites such as Rey.
Are we still going on? I gave up. Bigoted opinion? really? I do recall saying lots of people, not all the people, big difference there. Facts? anyone can go and get facts to support his or her opinion. King or queen, in todays world, there is no difference between the sexes (actually there was none to begin with but it has taken many years for someone people to accept this) but obviously some of you think so. Just in case, the nic has nothing to do with a king but your hs spanish would tell you so, so I will leave there. The bible? I do not claim to know the book as well as many of you claim but sometimes it takes more than knowing the good book, sometimes one has to follow it too. Any other concerns? I gave up already, remember? You are trying to jump on me with bogus facts or with emotional "facts". This article was not about illegals or not, just remembering the people that died that tragic day but somehow what we are still arguing about this. I GAVE UP people, I am a bigot according to some people; I am part of the problem according to others. Some of you might want to report me and hopefully have me taken out in that way you can have your little bonfire and sing kumbaya and this land is my land.. Enjoy!!!!
May 19, 2008 at 8:28 p.m.Rey? Did you ever present ANY facts? I read your bigoted opinions, but never one fact. You repeated other posters facts, but none of your own.
I insulted you? Geez, payback is terrible. You insulted EVERY resident of Victoria. And claim to know the Bible?
May 19, 2008 at 7:13 p.m.I belive that is what I suggest our US government should do. Enforce existing laws. They lack the will to do so in fear that our new housing starts and commercial building will stop all together due to rising labor costs. Pretty chicken-----, if you ask me.
May 19, 2008 at 7:09 p.m.Well you see I thought it was odd, thats why I asked a simple question. Instead of jumping me for asking about your choice of words you should be grateful I brought your mistype to your attention. If I had not then others would think you are into persecuting illegals.
May 19, 2008 at 6:50 p.m.Ok Mark, I gave up remember, you win!!!! Your logic is beyond my level and I can not fight your "facts". Now, you can go on living your life in peace, you proved a point. Just a thought, why so much anger? Threaten? afraid? confused? Is one of them three, look deep inside and you will find one of them. Meanwhile, enjoy your time with your family, look at them and give thanks to God that they are here, safe and sound, they did not nor you had to emmigrate to get a better life. Lucky you!!!!!. Anyhow, thanks for the facts.
May 19, 2008 at 6:28 p.m.OK....your words....persecute...here is they definition: per·se·cute (pûrs-kyt)
tr.v. per·se·cut·ed, per·se·cut·ing, per·se·cutes
1. To oppress or harass with ill-treatment, especially because of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or beliefs.
2. To annoy persistently; bother.ute....
Now, knowing your wife is not of this country I found that to be an odd choice of words.
Heartless souls was directed at those saying those people deserved to die..of which you were not one.
Hop off, you are really starting to annoy me.
May 19, 2008 at 6:06 p.m.WOW...I have no words for that tirade below.....I just asked why we would wish them to be persecuted....hmmmmmm....give me a minute & I'll respond. (dunno why I'll even bother as I am sure it will be deleted) Some people are especially sensitive!
May 19, 2008 at 5:52 p.m.marksremark.. temper,temper....ok, you win with your logic, just make sure that you check your blood pressure. You are too funny, thanks for the laughs!!!!!!!!! Ah, I am glad that your HS Spanish is paying off too.
May 19, 2008 at 12:28 p.m.When speaking or writing of Amnesty for illegals; I think one should remember two words: Ronny Reagan.
May 19, 2008 at 11:42 a.m.Bighorn, you ran out of "facts" and now you are going to go after me because my poor grammar habits? why don't you call me ugly while you are it? High School Civics, really? you still believe that the Texas' fathers died valiantly at the Alamo right? High school civics huh, maybe you should expand your knowledge and take a history class beyond high school my friend, it will do you good... oops, well.
May 18, 2008 at 11:36 p.m.Sailor, well written. So simple, yet people get so bend out of shape. I had the opportunity to drape our flag on "foreign" born soldiers. When that coffin was loaded on that plane, I not only saluted the flag but the soldier that died defending it. These new Americans actually loved this country more that the native ones, the main reason, because they did not take for granted what we got here, freedom. And like I wrote in posting last week, the first American soldier that died in Iraq was not an American, but a resident from Guatemala, a resident that his parents came illegally to this country. Now, at this time, we have about 3 soldiers that are MIA and possibly dead, one of the spouses of one of these soldiers is an illegal alien, we know exactly where she lives, shall we go after her and send her and her baby back to the Dominican Republic?
May 18, 2008 at 11:30 p.m.What the name of Sam Hill does Steve Tyler and his supporters. detractors, or in laws have to do with this?
May 18, 2008 at 11:26 p.m.Rey: Nice to know you have already had an economics lesson. Try one on Composition (english), Bible Study (try the New Testament first), and a High School Civics course while you are at it.
You have revealed your hateful nature towards anglos in this society, and given even more ammunition to the bigots on the other side.
"Holy than" types piss me off, especially when they preach lessons they never learned. Nice work, KingKing.
May 18, 2008 at 11:22 p.m.Markremarks, thanks for the insightful response, now I can go to sleep better, since someone so knowledgeable and profound opened my eyes. I never saw it that way, a game of chance, interesting, maybe in my next class of statistics,I might bring this up as a good example. Thank Mr. Thomas Aquinas, your philosophy has left with a better view of what is going on life.
May 18, 2008 at 11:20 p.m.So now you are going to give me a lesson on economics? First of all, the Mexican Govt? May I remind you that there are more country that Mexico? To you, everybody that is name Gonzales is Mexican, right? For the record, there are some Mexicans that are much worst than what we are here. They rape the women and steal these poor people money, when the illegals travel through their country. Many of the women are forced to work as sex slaves for these people here in the US in order to pay for their services to bring them across. So, let the Mexican Govt fix its problems, there are more countries and see what happens. Is not as easy as you make it sound. These countries do not have the infrastructure to finance their schooling beyond 8th grade. It would take much money and time to do so, something that these poor people do not have, the money to send their kids to school and the time. As far as the VicAD, they got what they wanted, a discussion out of these. In any case, thank you for the economic class, I had one before thank you.
May 18, 2008 at 11:06 p.m.Sorry, Reyrey, but words mean things. "Victoria is full of hateful people". Your words.
May 18, 2008 at 10:54 p.m.Pretend to be better than other, while spitting vile all the same. Read your good book and learn. You are not better than other, just prejudiced in the other direction. Which is just as bad.
My position? Well stated in other posts, but here it is. #1 the VicAd is shamefully piling on and rehashing events that occured 5 years ago. #2. Illegal immigration will continue as long as the Mexican Government and economy offer little chance of advancement or growth at home. #3. The US government has refused to enforce laws already on the books in fear of hurting certain service and construction related industries. Therefore, we allow them to "import" low wages (and skilled) workers and subsidize those employers while providing some low level degree of support through our welfare system.
Now, call me hateful and a bigot for those views. You already have several times with your prejudiced statements.
Remember. Words have meaning.
Then it was good that I did it. The people that got offended were the ones that had something to feel guilty about it. The ones that have nothing to be ashamed, they simple agreed or wrote nothing. Once again, I am sorry for poking people's eyes but my intention was to get those people that believe that those deaths were actually deserved. To those that do not believe so, I am sorry but once again, I will not sit here and let this ignorance go unnoticed.
May 18, 2008 at 10:48 p.m.Your statement of there only being hateful people in this town obviously was directed at everyone who posted on this story. There were a few of us who do not think these people deserved to die, so your sweeping generalization was a tad offensive & over the top. Not to mention not productive either.
May 18, 2008 at 10:40 p.m.Victoriabybirth, as you can see, I did not go after him, he went after me, I merely replied to his response. I did not go specifically after anybody, just a comment about this not being an issue whether they were legally or illegally but just a fact that these people died and we should just ponder on what happen to this people instead of criminalizing them.
May 18, 2008 at 10:34 p.m.Touche', so 50/50 huh? and which 50% do you consider yourself? the one that believes that death is a deserving end for breaking the law of this land or the 50% that believes that we are all humans and before being citizens of this land, we are the sons of God? Mind you, I do not agree on illegal immigration but sometimes hunger makes people brake the law and like someone pointed out, we are lucky that we are born in this country and we take that for granted. Enjoy your week, nice seeing your postings and by the way, my conscious is clear, I can honestly say that if I can help a less unfortunate, I will, like the big guy in the sky instructs to do.
May 18, 2008 at 10:31 p.m.ReyRey, yes there are a few heartless souls posting on here but Bighorn was not one of them. If you READ his post it was positive & for finding ways of ensuring this never has to happen again. Instead of condemning others maybe you should focus on the same.
May 18, 2008 at 10:30 p.m.ReyRey: Your hatred for anyone is damaging to yourself. And you hate the critics very well in print.
May 18, 2008 at 10:14 p.m."There nothing but hateful people in Victoria"? By my count, the posters are about 50/50. Was Ragman hateful? Victorian By Birth?
Look in your own soul before casting those stones.
Bighorn, I am part of the problem because I pointed out the obvious? I am not part of the problem, sir!. See, this article was about people dying and yet there are people in this forum that actually have the audacity to say that these people deserved to die? Maybe I am bothering someone's conscious but that would be to thinking to high of some of you. I am not part of the problem, just that you do not like being poked on the eye with the truth!
May 18, 2008 at 10:10 p.m.This forum is going to go on and on with nothing but hateful comments from people whom have no heart what so ever...
If it was to have happened to some of your families some of you wouldn't be so happy go lucky about putting fault and making there deaths OK because they were in the wrong...
The price of hating other human beings is loving one's self less
May 18, 2008 at 10:05 p.m.Thanks for your condemnation, ReyRey. We citizens of Victoria appreciate your opinion.
When will YOU realize YOU are a big a part of the problem with your crappy attitude.
May 18, 2008 at 9:46 p.m.Here we go again. There is nothing but hateful people in this town. Illegal aliens criminals for breaking the law? First of all, they were looking for a better life just like our first "illegal immigrants". Who asked the natives to see if these people were legal or not? And do not give the crap about the pilgrims were here to escape England's persecution on religion. If you believe that, you might want to take history past middle school or perhaps high school. They were here because economic reasons, just like these illegals are. So, really it becomes down to just plain hate from all of you or shall be say, ignorance? it seems like ignorance is rampart in this town, which I do not know if it is worst than racism. Enjoy your weekend you hate mongers and remember there is always church on Wednesday to make you feel better about who you are.
May 18, 2008 at 7:41 p.m.Ragman, The only folks I would add to your list are the employers who lure these aliens here. They are the cause of the problem along with the zero penalty when caught with them under their employ. Enforce the Immigration Reform of 1986 and you can forget about the fence and have LEGAL documented workers here. That don't burden our current welfare state.
May 18, 2008 at 7:04 p.m.Good post ragman...I agree 100%.
Sailor, why do you wish to persecute the illegals?
May 18, 2008 at 6:45 p.m.I got that same E-Mail, BUT, I checked out the statements made. About 90% of them are false. Pure propaganda.
May 18, 2008 at 5:57 p.m.There is nothing wrong about feeling sorry for these folks, and at the same loathing those who put them in this awful position. The Coyotes and the people who continue to employee these folks illegally are the ones most responsible. Then the ineffective and corrupt Mexican government. Then I guess these folk for putting thier children into this situation. Only because of our birth do we benefit from our windfall--of being in the United States.

It is awful and I wouldnt wish that to happen to any human ..but the bottem line is ..they were coming into this country ILLEGALLY ! And now some how this story is supposed to what make us feel bad ? Help illegals cross the border ? I dont understand why this article is being published ? Why not run a story on the young men and women who are cominng home from war and struggling to overcome injuries ? Why not do a story on the parents who lost children fighting in Iraq? or the husbands and wives who lost their spouse in Iraq ?
May 18, 2008 at 3:40 p.m.This story is OVER its done..
This is sad and tragic...but it is was also the result of making bad decisions on the part of those who died. I for one have never had any problems with Mexicans living and working here in South Texas...they have been here for as long as I can remember. They are hard working, family and community loving people who are willing to take the jobs that Americans won't and do a excellent job at it. However there are ways to legally enter this country, and doing anything else is a crime. No this is not a crime that merits death...but then when a person who is a theif gets shot and killed by the cops or by the victim...they have died for a crime that didn't merit it either...and there are no big publicized memorials each year held for them. These poor people died because they chose to not follow the laws and take the risk on sneeking into this country...and their deaths were the result of their decisions. Perhaps instead of trying to make this an American saga...they should remember it is Mexico as a tragic example of what can happen if your choices aren't right. I know things are bad in Mexico, and I don't blame them for wanting a better life with more opportunities, but perhaps the majority of good people in Mexico should get together and work to make the changes to their own country.
May 18, 2008 at 2:39 p.m.Yep,they were wrong, illegal and all, they were wrong for coming into our country but never should death have been there punishment. This could have been us but we were chosen as the lucky ones to have the freedom that we do have. It's always easier to judge others when your life isn't anything like theirs. My prayers go out to all.
May 18, 2008 at 1:48 p.m.More money needs to be provided to Sheriff O'Connor and Police Chief Bruce Ure to deal with criminal illegal aliens. Our police officers need more leniency in arresting and detaining illegals. Because the federal government won't do it's job; state, city and county police departments are left to handle the problem. South Texas needs a large detention facility just for illegals. I can think of no better place to build the detention facility than Victoria County. Our county is a major stop for illegals. What is it going to take? One of our police officers being killed by an illegal, like the recent Houston cop that was shot in the back of the head by an illegal? Let's hope that never happens. But Victoria County needs to let illegals know it's not a sanctuary city.
May 18, 2008 at 11:55 a.m.These 19 illegal aliens broke the law. They had no business trying to sneak into the United States. The laws are there for a reason. Our citizens and police officers have to deal with criminal illegal aliens on a daily basis. If they would have used the proper procedure for LEGAL immigration, like many others who have to wait and be patient, they would not be dead. The blame lies with the illegals. They know the dangers of being a criminal.
May 18, 2008 at 11:49 a.m.Well have you ever seen a "Mexican" on the side of the road holding up signs about needing money?? No, because they are all busy digging the ditches on the farms or replacing that roof at a discounted rate!!!
They just want to be here and create a life for themselves so they can take advantage of everyone else like Mr. Villafranca trying to milk the city's insurance for his $50 thousand dollar house!!!!!
May 18, 2008 at 2:20 a.m.
May 18, 2008 at 2:20 a.m.This town has too much hate for such small community, maybe it'll change one day.
Don't be so hateful,DAMN!!
May 18, 2008 at 1:02 a.m.If there is anything we should be "remembering" is the stupid thing these illegals did by the way they tried to illegaly come here. WITH CHILDREN! We are all now supposed to feel sorry for them? Yeah, O.K.
May 18, 2008 at 12:26 a.m.May all the 19 R I P.
Via con Dios.
May 18, 2008 at 12:07 a.m.
