Congratulations to everyone who participated and placed at the following District 11 4-H contests: Photography, Clara Smejkal, second place, animals; and third, theme; Kerilyn Wendel - first, arch. elements, third, people, third, plant/flora; Casey Tucker, third, theme, blue ribbon, natural landscapes; red ribbon, animals; Colton Fischer and Ashley Tucker have two photos each competing at the state level.

Roundup contest, Jon Wilson, blue ribbon, public speaking; Cheyenne Borchert, third, poetry/prose; Kerilyn Wendel, first, musical/band; first senior choreographed dance and will advance to state; Teneal Reinecke, Erin Hessler; second senior celebrate 4-H team and advancing to state, Melanie Janssen, Stephen Janak, Caitlin Reinecke, Carroll Powitzky and Tasha Kloesel.

Livestock judging contest, eighth, intermediate team, Ryan Hessler, Dustin Hempel, Allan Parsons and Kayla Friend; fourth, junior team, Amanda Albrecht, Dylan Hempel, Alex Brannan and Haley Powtizky; other participants included Brandon Parham, Carroll Powtizky, Amber Rose, Cheyenne Borchert, Kaitlin Friend and Samantha Powtizky. Consumer decision-making, third place senior team and advancing to state, Shaylyn Drozd, who also placed third in individual, Melanie Janssen, who was sixth place individual and Katelyn Rather; fourth junior team - Seth Garrett, who is also first place individual, Cody Bishop, and Kalynne Drabek; other participants included Dakoda Drabek and Abigail Schneider. Fashion show contest, Kerilyn Wendel, first, intermediate buying specialty; Breanna Tater, first, intermediate buying casual; Christina Haynes, blue ribbon, intermediate buying casual; Emily Weaver, first, junior buying active; Leann Weaver, blue ribbon, junior buying specialty.

4-H County Council and Adult Leader’s Association will have its final meeting of the 4-H year at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the extension office. All 4-H members and adults are invited to attend as we wrap up the year with elections and discussion on Harvest of Fun.

Any archery member interested in participating in the state shooting sports games on July 21-26 in San Antonio should call Janet Lesak at 361-920-7770 for more information. Deadline to sign up is Tuesday. Please note that all games are outdoors.

The Wildlife Habitat Evaluation Project will host a meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the South Texas Electric Cooperative Park on Farm-to-Market Road 447 near Nursery. The meeting will feature a discussion on successful management practices for turkey and quail from a local range and wildlife manager. Other presentations include the Atwater Prairie Chicken by the Texas Zoo director and habitat activities presented by the Texas Wildlife Association. Additionally, a discussion on harvesting and scoring Rio Grande turkeys will be lead by local Texas Parks and Wildlife Department game biologists. Live quail and pheasants will be available for viewing as well as mounted trophies of Rio Grande turkey and quail. A lesson on how to preserve and prepare your trophy for mounting will be conducted by Blue Quail Taxidermy. It is open to the public. Call Henry Wood at 361-572-4845 for additional information.

Major show steer validation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, at Briggs Ranch in Bloomington. If you were planning on state validating a steer, you should have already ordered tags. If you have not paid for your tags at $10 each, you are encouraged to stop by the extension office and do so.

4-H record books, award applications, ambassador applications, and club scrapbooks are all due to the extension office by June 13. Award and ambassador interviews will be on June 30. Award applications are available on the county extension Web site (http://victoria-tx.tamu.edu) by following the Victoria County 4-H link or pick up applications at the extension office. Award categories are first year boy; first year girl; bronze star; silver star; gold star; I dare you; Leo Anderson “Caring Heart;” Karen Obsta Wendel outstanding adult leader (male and female), and friend of 4-H (business and individual).

There has been some recent interest by families concerning participating in the commercial steer project at San Antonio and Houston. If you would like to learn more about the project call Jeff Perry at 361-582-6303.
